Default 2005 WRX - Engine warning light !!

Can I do any self diagnostics ? I've heard about connecting two cables together under the dash and then getting a sequence of lights, but I don't know much about it.
Any help would be appreciated.
There are two green connectors under the dash that look like they would go together ?

Please help
