as said check hoses for splits and make sure none have come off.

Yeah, sounds like the hose from the turbo to the underside of the intercooler has either come off or split. As your car is an STI it'll have a decent hose on it so it may well be that it's come off.

i have had the intercooler of and can not find anything split but does it only have to be a pin hole to cause this?
i take it that the clip is on the turbo?
will my dump valve cause a problem?
thanks for the replys guys

yes the clip is on the turbo.
a dump valve stuck open could cause the fault

after checking a few pipes and taking off inter cooler i left it over night and i had a mate come over to check the vacuum pipes and pressure.
after a hour or so we took it out and all seemed fine so gods no's what went wrong.
any ideas what this may be.
