Default Check engine light and fan cutting in?

Hi all
I bought a 1995 UK turbo last week and all has been fine until today.
I havn't used or started the car for a couple of days and today i started it and the 'check engine' light is staying on and the drivers side electric fan is on even though the car is stone cold.
I did a search and found out how to do a diagnostic and fault 22 came up.
I know this is the code for the knock sensor but why would the fan come on?
Is it possible for a sensor to die when the car whilst its not being used?
The car has fsh and has not been abused or messed with and there were no problems at all on the 200 mile journey home with it on Sunday
Thanks in advance for any help.
Regards Jules...

fans on when engine cold is usually engine coolant temp sensor.. you need the one with the square plug not the spade connectors (that is the dash gauge sensor)

So you mean the engine temp sensor that tells the ecu the temp of the engine?
Would this give me a 'check engine ' light if it was malfunctioning and come up as code 22??
If not i can't believe 2 parts can go ****-up whilst the car is sat on my drive at exactly the same time
Thanks for your input.

no it does normally record it's own error code.. but the fans running when cold is deffo coolant temp sensor fault.. ecu is not sure on engine temp and covers both bases

Back of the blocks sort of half under the throttle/manifold I believe (looking in the manual, not at a car)

Cheers Simon i'll have a gander uner there later.

I disconected the battery yesterday and left it off all night to erase the ecu memory. Connected it back up this morning and started it back up and its back to perfect again! Obviously the problem could re-occur but fingers crossed it may just have been a false alarm.
Cheers for the help fella's

by any chance it isnt silver is it and you bought it of a guy in shewberry?? for £2,995.

you need to go to a subaru dealership and get them to look at it. If your lucky and all is well it cost £50 and they will reset the switch.

No its red and totally standard appart from a dealer fitted 'prodrive' option pack fitted when it was near new. I bought it from a 60 year old guy who had just retired and bought a 4x4 'normal/boring' car having owned this for 8 years!
I also bought a white import WRX within 2 days of buying this which is the other end of the spectrum with lots of mods as these imports seem to have.
Cheers Jules....

No problem just some guy was saying one with an engine check light on and he sold it in the last week. From what i know an engine check light can cost £50 -£1000. but on yours seens to be something small. Sometimes the sensors need clearing. try that first. if you need parts try ebay and you can get them used cheap.
