Default standard dump valve

Need some help, i fitted a bailey vta dump valve to the scoob about 4 weeks ago and today I finally had enough, took it off and threw it as far as I could.
The car ran like sh*t with it.
I am not sure if the standard one is fitted correctly.
Not sure which way round it should go.
what symptoms would I get if it was fitted wrong??
I have used the car today and it ran fine/boosted properly.

If it's a v4 one then it basically fits 'upside down' in the engine bay - vacuum port at the bottom, entry from the intercooler at the top, exit back to the inlet pipe is on the side.
