timing belt removal advice
whats the best way to remove/mark up timing belt
to make refitting easier
never done this before
am not a mechanic, but i am mechanically minded
managed to remove and refit this engine myself(94 wrx RA)
after head gasket had blown(head gasket/belt replaced by mechanic),but after refitting engine i filled it with water
and it was leaking from the water pump(where it meets engine)
so i am going to replace water pump and gasket
any advice will help thanks

Hi,
I changed my own timing belt recentley and i'm not a mechanic either. I have to say it was harder than i thought and very frustrating. Make sure you have a mate that can help hold the pulleys in the correct places too otherwise dont bother trying!!!
One little tip which i forgot was that my Subaru mechanic friend uses a pair of mole grips to clamp the pulleys together (not hard enough to damage them obviously) to help keep the timing marks lined up as they spring round really easily....

easily done on your own, I removed the rad for more access when I did mine (also changing a faulty waterpump)
The cams have easy to see timing marks and the cranks is easy enough to see. The top right hand (facing you) cam has a tendancy to spring off when lined up as it is just coming on cam, but a few goes and its simple enough to keep in place. Once you have it done, rotate the crank fully at least twice to make sure the cam timing marks still line up. (the crank will rotate 2 rotations to the cams 1) so to keep checking, turn the engine over by crank in multiples of 2

- Remove all the covers
- Start the engine up
- Run a stanly blade along the middle of the belt
- Switch engine off
- Pul half the belt off nearest the rad
- Push new belt onto pulleysCut off second half of the belt
- push timing belt all the way home
- refit covers
ANd if your brave enough to do that I am impressed
