Default Hello Guys! - Newbie help!

Hi,
I am currently a student in my last year at Uni, I have a job Secured for when i graduate, so it finally means in a few months time, I can after years of waiting get my Impreza!

Im budgeting about 8k ish. I really want a WRX STI 7, Bug Eye.

Is there anything I need to know before I start getting serious about buying?

I have heard some stuff about piston rattle and bore problems or similar on some Impreza's, but it was only pub talk so I took it with a pinch of salt.

Looking around I see that quite a few older ones (classic shape) have had new engines, whats the usual cause of this?

Are the red tops that much better an engine? Whats different internal wise?

And lastly is the final 6th gear on an STI worth having over a standard WRX 5speed for motormiles?

Thanks for your help chaps.

Ollie.

Hi possible newbie !

1. six speed box has 2/3/4 stacked for acceleration, top two gears on WRX/STI are the same, so no fuel savings...
2. STI motors are far tougher, lots of 2001 onwards are running over 400 bhp with bolt-on mods, mine too in four weeks time !
3. Any abused car will suffer, classics more so.
4. As with any car six years old, pick a cared for example with loads of bills...
5. Shouldn't have any problems really, avoid text speak in adverts tho'. LOL

HTH
