Default Fried piston on v7 spec-c sti. Re-build or sale?

Hi. I've been told that i've probably fried a piston by my mechanic. I've been quoted £1500-2500 to repair. Does this sound about right or is there anyone in the south-west who can do it cheaper?

Also I've had a few offers for it as it is. What Do you think it's worth? y2k bugeye, 27k miles and very good condition in blue.

Any help would be really appreciated.

Sounds about right for a fix, the problem you have is it will be worth nothing if you sell it as a non runner.

I've had offers of nearly £5k and i'm quite tempted to save the hassle of repairs to be honest. I'm not 100% sure of the damage yet either.

You could get a new 2.5 sti short motor for £1500 and it shouldn't cost more than a £1000 to fit it.

not cost effective IMHO, dont forget a ballpark £500 on mapping if going that route

Yes, but think of it as an upgrade, same again or a 2.5 rebuild for the price of remap. Thats how i would look at it.

I would probably go for the upgrade if I could afford it. But my bank/wife say different.

Pittys STi,
I have a standard STi8 Spec C tall engine available (better heads and cams than the V7 I believe). Will take 400+.

26k miles, perfect running order.

£2250.00

Regards,
Shaun

Hi. I've just added another post explaining what happened. To be honest I'm not even sure if thats the problem. The mechanic who said it was piston failure also offered to buy it in the same breath.

Only 'cos he'd do the work for free and sell for a profit, or keep for himself.

That did cross my mind. I also wondered if perhaps he's saying it's re-build time because he knew i'd be left with no choice but to sell it then.

Who's API? Also is there any way of finding the most likely problem without stripping the engine?

Any competent mechanic should be able to tell based on compression, and leakdown tests, as well as how the car runs at present

If they cant....well....that seems to be common, which is a pity.

A bore scope would allow them to see inside to inspect the piston crown for damage, although a lot of them might not have such a tool.

How would you expect a car to run if it doe's have piston damage? I've been told it down on compression on piston 4. Thanks for the advice.

It would run mostly on 3 cylinders obviously, depending on the damage. If there was enough damage, it would be pressurising the crankcase, and chucking oil out the breathers, and possibly exhaust too ( if it can make it past the cat ).
The plug from that hole, would also be oily, or have oily deposits.

It would be very easy for any decent mechanic to diagnose.

I take it a little damage is not much better than alot of damage repair wise? Still an engine out job I'd guess.

Engine out and swap short engine, plus various other NEW components, modine & oil pump.

Could look at short engine from the states with the current exchange rate try Home standard 2.5 US STi is $1700. Ron at RAW is very helpful
