Can Injectors be damaged by flow testing?
Hi SNers!
I am having a problem with some Denso 550 injectors that I recently purchased second hand.
These were described as being "in perfect running order". The seller had bought them new and had used them in a car running 341bhp with a recent remap from a very well respected mapper.
Before using them in the trackcar I'm building at the moment my tuner sent them away for flow testing and to see how the spray patterns were. He was interested to know which flowed higher (even marginally) as he could use that in cyl 3.
Sadly, the report from the injector testing people wasn't good as it said:
"After flow testing these injectors it was quite apparent that there was something not right with the spray pattern,
the fuel metered from the pintel was erratic and spraying in all directions on all of the injectors tested.
The pintel holes are manufactured in such a way as to direct fuel into the inlet
chamber at a precise position for maximum atomisation of fuel before combustion occurs.
The spray pattern from these injectors would result in very poor atomisation and
poor combustion.
Further investigation into the pintel tips has revealed that what only be described as appalling engineering
rework, two of each of the four holes on the pintel on each injector have been drilled out, obviously to try
to increase the fuel flow. Under the magnifying glass the damage to the injectors is very clear.
I state that these injectors are totally unsuitable to be used in any engine and are fit for the bin."
I also should mention that a difference of up to 13% was noted between flowrates of individual injectors!
Now, I have contacted the seller of the injectors and given him the details above.
He has come back to me to say that his mapper believes, and i quote: "flow testing puts a lot a pressure on the solenoids which can get damaged"
He also comments that dropping the injectors can damage them too. I think this is a case of clutching at straws because the injectors were well wrapped when supplied to me and remained undisturbed until the flow testing operation commenced. I highly doubt that the 'damage' witnessed by the flow tester would have occured by simple dropping.
So, i'm asking for the vast depth of knowledge that SN posseses for some comments about the above. Ultimately, i'm in the situation that the 550's i've paid £230ish for are no use and that i'm getting nowhere with the seller who insists that the injectors were fine when he sold them and were new when he bought them. Sadly, i don't have the experience to argue my point with this individual with anything other than the plain hard facts laid out in the engineers report.
Finally, i'd just like to note that i'm not out to blacken anyone's name and have no intention of mentioning any tuner, mapper, tester or seller details. I'm just looking for some experienced advice to go back to the seller with to help him see sense.
Thanks in advance for any comments or advice offered.
Best regards
James

I think the engineers report says it all.
Hope you get some compensation......could have been a lot nastier if you had just installed them and not bothered with the flow testing!!
Some poeple are just out to make a few quid and not worry about what happens to others.

I'd get back to the seller and mention that the engineering report stated that the pintel tips were driled out to increase fuel flow (and badly it seems) as it has altered the spray angles.. That is not cause by simply dropping an injector

Thanks for the comments guys.
That is exactly what i've said to him and he's gone all quiet on me. I was just wanting to see if any other opinions came to light that would aid me in the argument.
I'm not one for ultimatums but it's looking more and more likely that I have to arrange something the longer I hear nothing.
I still have home address etc from payment so can always pursue on that route but i'm very keen to resolve this amicably.
Cheers

Sorry to here your missfortune but you have saved big £££'s by not fitting them !!
Tbh i would buy the injectors new from Lateral performance and get them flow tested there at the same time....and you know they will be right !
As for the guy selling you the injectors, maybe he never knew about the problems...but then with the mapping that was done the fuel problems were not noticed ?
See if you can both come to an arrangement with the refund of cash ?
