Default Help required with gearbox problem

Driving along today at around 40mph, went to select 5th, felt a bit dodgy and when i backed off the throttle it popped out of gear. When i select 5th gear it gives a little crunch like the synchromesh has departed and 5th gear still pulls fine if i hold the gearstick in place. But if i let go and take foot off throttle then it pops out again.

Every other gear is still ok. Anyone have any suggestions as to what could be the problem?

Looks like this weekend will be spent removing a gearbox

Thanks in advance

The chances are that the nut holding 5th gear onto the shaft has come undone and is allowing the gear to walk backwards on the shaft, which in turn pulls it out of gear!

This is something that was happening to late classics & a different nut was introduced to stop this occurring.

You really ought to take the car off the road until you can sort it, as if this is your problem and the nut falls off completely you could do a lot of damage to the box.

Thanks for the reply. Car is off road for the moment as i was thinking about the 'if something was lose or broken' scenario.
