what mods for 400hp? also ported manifold vs tubular pros and cons?
hello i am new here, just recently bought myself an 03 wrx wagon and was wondering what the quickest way of acheiving 400+hp?

There isn't a quick way & it isn't cheap.
Your shopping list will include:
Headers & up pipe, de-cat, 3" exhaust system, injectors, fmic, air filter, remap or ecu upgrade & remap, turbo eg md321h, gearbox, clutch, forged pistons. Probably the best part of £8k there & thats before you ugrade other minor details like brakes & suspension.

Fuel cut defender and enough boost to destroy the engine and turbo in short order?
Seriously, for 400bhp....
Larger turbo (Garret GT series/MD321)
FMIC, although the STi TMIC is just about capable
Ported manifolds (or tubular)
255lph fuel pump
Full decat/sportscat exhaust inc up-pipe
Larger injectors
Full remap
Realistically your bottom end is only OK to about 350bhp with a sensible life, so for 400 you'll also need a forged (or STi) bottom end.

remember that a big turbo comes with late spool, especially on a 2-litre.
My td05-20g with tubular headers spools quite late (1 bar at 2900 rpm in fifth, with full boost at 3400), but in lower gears it's not quite that good at all (spool wise). I'm happy with my set-up, but low down grunt is lacking, which is a bit of a pain when pootling about.

Better off selling the WRX and getting an STi if you want 400, to be honest.
If you'd settle for 340ish (which makes for a very quick car) then look at my plus profile to get an idea of the mods you'd need, you could settle for the STi8 intercooler rather than the front mount though, you'd also need a decat up-pipe for your MY car I believe.
After that, it starts to get expensive!

depends how far your gonna go.
befor eyou start going looking at sti's have a think, if your gonna go 400, uprated suspension, uprated brakes etc etc
then even if you get an sti you'll end up doing them anyway, but you'll be buying and selling a car meaning you loose money for no improvment

subaru didn't make sti 03 wagons. the prats; they would have sold loads.
I have an 18g on my classic wagon (with a standard UK bottom end), and Henrik is right it does spool up later than the OEM TD04 but its only an issue if you can't use your gearbox It also alows you to cruise at 85\90 without rolling on and off boost.

We all know 400 is achievable on standard internals and that its leads to a ticking bomb in regards to the engine, gearbox etc, etc.

I love Scooby's , driven a few in the past and almost bought one on at least 3 or 4 occasions in the past. Also had a 200SX turbo and various other turbocharged machines.

My advice is try 320 bhp it's not to be sneezed at !
Then transfer all your bits onto a 2.3 bottom end later for even more fun.... like blowing your clutch and gearbox to bits !

lol sounds fun lads, i suppose al just have to try things out, i think i will settle for 350ish, whats the stock turbo good for? and do the pink sti injectors max out at 350hp?

View my scoob mate, spent around 5 months shopping around and pciking things up cheep as and when they become available then paid around £3500 to have it all out together inc some additional bits purchased by the tuner.
Def would consider starting with an STi though. I went for an Axis Racing stage 2 block from america and had no choice but to start with a wrx as i blew mine up, lol heheh

STI pinks will flow enough for roughly 370bhp at standard fuel pressure, but with a fuel pressure regulator 400'ish is achievable.
On the other hand, a decent FPR will set you back almost 200 notes, so it might be cheaper to buy bigger injectors to begin with.
