Default WRX Classic

Hi Guys,

Im pretty new to the world of Scooby's.

Im basically going to be looking for one that I can effectively just drive without too much hassle.

What power / performance is available from a WRX? Are there more than one model of WRX?

If I was looking to tune to less than 300bhp, what would I need to do?

Sorry for the newbie questions!

Im not really wanting to spend too much as its a stop gap for a year really.

looking at spending no more than £4k total - I know the car itself isnt going to be minter by any means, but that doesnt concern me - i dont care what it looks like from the outside when im in the drivers seat LOL

£3500.00 should get you a half decent WRX, and spend the rest getting it to 300bhp. Tuning the earlier models is cheapest, pre 96. Later models can also be done cheaply with some sort of boost controller, but not as realible IMO, the ECU's can be expensive to upgrade. Everyone has a different opinion though!!

Pre 96 Decat exhaust, panel filter, and an ECU upgrade chip for example.

Not really, same as any car purchase. Make sure everything is in order. And if it isn't then look elsewhere, there are thousands for sale at the moment and prices are tumbling. A proper buyers market, wait for the right car to come along. I'm also looking for my 2nd classic at the right price, have been for a while, deffo no need to rush.

If you haven't owned one before make sure you drive a few as from car to car they can be very different, dependant on maintenance. There are always a few classics in the 'for sale' section. 100's on pistonheads, but also 100's of junk too.

Yea thats the thing, I dont want a snotter, and there are alot forsale as you say!

I'm not too fussed about resale on it if I get it cheap - but then I may keep hold of it and use it as a track car if funds allow.

I ended up travelling around half the country in search of a good one. There are always ones that look great, run rough and vice versa. As said, there are some very good cars to be had for your price range and even around £3300 upwards, you just need to be patient which is sometimes difficult if you are after your first car.

Take your time, research on here for pitfalls etc and enjoy the search, it will make driving your final choice so much more enjoyable.

My car i got well cheap off ebay, i paid Well under £2500 (not saying exactly how cheap cuz ull all probably choke) my mates cussed me when i was bidding on it, but i went to look at it prior to the auction ending, good points: A) was in the next town to me, so didnt have to fill with petrol after buying it to drive home,
B) He spelt the title wrong which is why i got it so cheap...(try deliberately spelling what ur after on ebay wrong on purpose, ull be very surprised how many ppl spell things wrong and end up running auctions with no1 looking at all...on the seven day auction of the car only twelve people looked)
C) he had no reserve on the listing either
D)70,000 miles genuine on the clock, its a uk turbo
E)he hadnt drove it in 9 months due to a leg injury, plus he was like 60, and owned subarus through most of his life and had never ragged it
F)bodywork was MINT, had gold alloys on anyway, but completely standard

Bad point..... Its GREEN!! liked the colour at first, but now it just doesnt do me justice, having it sprayed soon with the sky blue colour that u see on a wr1 i think it is?? (anyone who has one please help by telling me the paint code!) looking to put those same wr1 alloys on it too in gold,

ANYWAY point is, just take ya time even on ebay, autotrader anywhere! like the guy said, the right one comes along. i was searching for months. hopefully putting pics up soon, still a newbie though only bought a few extras for the exterior of the car (sti spoiler/lights/exhaust etc) so any helpwith the engine department and advice would be welcome! As for mods mate, look on ebay its so cheap!

If you spend over £4,000 your going to get a good one. But shop around, I saw about ten subarus my one was £3,200 from £3,800. But theres pople selling the same car in poor condition with double the miles for more money! Also keep £500 for repairs. Getting it to 300bhps would be easy. iF you can spend an extra £500 and get a STI.
