what is the best way to get a (rear)stuck on number plate off

If it is just stuck on with adhesive pads and it is located on the number plate mounting section, then you dont have to be too gentle. Most of them will come off with some dental floss or thread pulled behind the plate and yanked or done in a sawing motion. You can also try inserting a credit card or similar shaped bit of thin plastic behind the plate.

Once off remove any residue with some tar and bug remover and then mount the new one on.Obvioulsy mounting a new one will cover any unsightly marks
