As I remember it, the TD 04 is from either the MY00 or MY01 car. The VF23, though from around MY95 or so, produces way more power especially when matched to a unrestricted down pipe and exhaust.

I ran a VF 23 on my MY00 Uk spec Wrx here in Trinidad and was able to achieve 12.2 regularly in the quarter mile. That time was faster than stock STi's from the same era. I have since upgraded to a JDM 2006 model which is way better all round than the MY00. If you can get one I would definitely go for it but you need to get the catless downpipe as well as a free flow exhaust to see the real benefits of any turbo up grade.

Hope this helps!!

with the vf23 fitted theres no comparison with tdo4. i fitted tubular headers, hks uppipe, 3inch hks exhaust system, freeflow intake, walbro pump, and topped off with full apexi ecu remap. this turbo kicks and accelarate hard. but i dont now how long the 5 speed box is gonna last. if you can find a vf23 they flow about 330 to 350 hp was originally fitted to a 22b. excellant ballbearing turbo.

Chris,

Do ensure that the spindle withe the turbines does not have very much play in the longitudinal axis. These turbos are from old cars and have all been abused somewhat, so you need to inspect it fairly well for its integrity. You dont want to have bearing failures or turbine blades failing at high boost pressures.

Good luck

I would also suggest a new set of SAMCO hoses from the intercooler to the turbo as the increased pressures can rupture or blow off any old hoses. Do ensure that when the mechanic is installing the turbo that all of the jubilee clips are tightened properly. I am sure you will be impressed with the upgrade. It makes a huge difference especially in the mid to upper range and unlike the T04 will produce torque up to the redline especially if a remap and free flow exhaust is fitted. Using an EBC or MBC (in conjunction with the VF 23) as opposed to a full remap is also quite cost effective as a full remap can be expensive. I was running 19 lbs of boost in fourth and up on 95 RON with no knocking on my external knock sensor.

Hope this helps

thanks again for the info. with regards to a remap is was thinking of contacting scott @ polar and just getting a new chip with a map for the new turbo, fmc, 440 injector, wilbro fuel pump, air filter and fuel pres reg. as carnt afford a new ecu and map at the same time.

hopeing this set up should see me in to the 300bhp 300 flb area.

Have a look at my profile (although using the VF28) 300 is easyily achieved.
