Default MY ENGINE IS KNOCKING/TAPPING

help me plz

car failed its mot on power steering pump leaking along with other few things, so now that i sorted the power steering i thought i'd clean up the mess the fluid left under the bonnet, so i started the engine and power washed the engine bay. i covered up the induction kit so it didn't get wet and didn't soak any electrics.

now when i rev between 2k & 3k rpm i get a knocking/tapping noise. anyone know what the hell i've done?

i've cleaned many engines this way and never had a problem like this before.

i feel like a right **** now

My Scoob developed a tapping, sounded like a clapped out fiesta, done a compression test and each cylinder reached 150psi, so pretty much ruled out piton slap, on removal of the rocker cover (Near side) I found the exhaust lifters are very loose. As the car is a MY'99 is has shimmed lifters, so will need to source these very soon

piston slap doesn't cause low compression btw..

2-3k rpm, sounds like a bottom end knocking.. bearings ****ed?

is it a real un describable dull metal knocking sound?

Bottom end bearings have a distinct horrible knocking..

Get a video maybe mate?

How does it not?

Im not arguing it, as i dont know, just curious to know

Its caused by the piston moving in the cylinder and hitting the cylinder wall right? Would there not be a slight drop it compression due to there being a bigger gap from the cylinder wall to the piston?

If you dont want to ruin thread, pm me . Genuinly interested.

Thanks

the piston can slap without damaging the bore..

it rattles..

yes in extreme slap there can be damage but unusual..

2wd cossies get piston slap rather alot but still run fine . I would stop driving it because wgat ever it is you might nake worse by driving it resulting in terminal damage to the engine !!!! .strip the rocker cover off or get a mechanic out mate.

Are you sure is the water ? You said some other things were replaced/fixed too.

It is very difficult to say what makes the noise, especiallly since imprezas have a wide range of noises
In any case, just an idea: did you check your exhaust pipes ? up-pipe especially ? Because the last 2 imprezas I had they both developed it after a while, and they both did it between around 2500 - 3500 rpm. In fact is still doing it, I just ignore it
