Default Recently fitted sports cat...not MOT emissions failure!...

Hi all, Hopefully somebody can give me some advice here..Recently iv repaced my standard downpipe cat on MY95 WRX Wagon JDM to a Ninja fast flow cat, and as my mot is coming up for renewal i took it for a test..as you all know it failed by some margin on emisions..
Just to add to the mot garage is owned by a relative so im confident they wouldnt just fob me off, they took my car for a spin and gave it plenty of revs to heat the cat up but i was told its not doing its job at all.
One thing that first comes to mind is i must have a dud cat, but iv also got an esl chip fitted and with the car not being remapped to suit the sports cat could this cause unburnt fuel to escape through the cat ??
Finally i also recently replaced the lambda as my old one was faulty..i was told by the mot tester that the new lambda wouldnt cause my car to fail on emisions..
Anyway any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated as im at a loss scatching my head at the moment

My Ninja Sports cat works fine... been on the car for about 2 yrs now, passed mots fine ... you do have to make sure that the cat is hot though to get it through but the emissions are very low when its warm!

well as iv said the mot tester took it for a sprint and gave the cat plenty of time to heat up but it still failed by quiet a margin...

My Ninja Sports Cat has passed two MOTs when cold - surely something is wrong with your particular one?

^^^^As above^^^^

Must be faulty, or another issue with the car.

I have a Ninja sports cat on the Forester T/tb and it passed the last two MOTs ....just. It had to be really hot and just passed on the limit.

Might be worth checking or replacing your Water Temp sensor (The one the ECU reads, not the one that is linked to the Water Temp display on the dash!!)

But scooby world only say a standard uk car will pass a mot with just a ninja sports cat. It doesn`t say a jdm car will. Although my verion 5 did, it took a couple of new sensors and then it was right on the limit.

It's quite possible it would fail on a map which was set up for a catless car that now has a cat - the flow, particularly at idle, will be quite different & for a catless car it may have been set up to run at around 14.4:1 rather than stoich as it'll typically be smoother & more stable around there, but the cat won't be able to 'clean' that very well, added to which the additional (however small) 'block' of the cat will richen it up more, & I expect that'll all be too rich for the idle test...
Assuming you haven't got a wide-band to look at to confirm the above, if I were you I'd contact your mapper about how idle, etc. was set up - at least it would be able to remove this potential problem from the list!
And the lambda would likely cause the car to fail - unless the ECU is running open-loop - but I don't think it would be on the ESL (but I don't know that ECU so could well be wrong ).

The ESL runs closed loop fuelling so unless your lambda is faulty it will run stoich at idle and light cruise. After that its down to the cat to remove NO/CO/HC.

Ah, ok. Any more detail than 'failed on emissions'? Knowing which emissions would point the finger!

Yes it failed on fast idle test..max limit 0.300, actual 0.791.
Now through mot with original cat...Actual 0.157. However i did add some fuel additive which was apparently proven to lower emissions....i cant remember the name but it was made by Wynns..il be buying some more of this stuff for next year i think
