Default Help! Cant get brake discs that fit

Hi again guys, I'm really hoping someone on here can help cause I'm at my wits end with this now. I bought my N reg 96 Scooby Impreza Turbo Estate about 3 months ago but around a month or so ago the front drivers side caliper started binding so I ordered a set of calipers from a breakers off the same year car, a set of 276mm discs (supposed to be the correct size) and new pads.

I fitted the calipers, they were exactly the same as the old ones, fitted the pads into them, no problem but when I looked at the discs they were too big. Now everywhere I've looked says Impreza Turbos from that year only use 276mm discs, even my local Subaru dealership cannot help me.

I wondered if someone had fitted different hubs maybe but I don't understand the discs not fitting given I replaced the calipers with the correct ones for the car and supposedly the correct discs too but nobody seems to be able to help me locally.

Motor World reckon they are the discs for the non turbo but the car is definitely a turbo and I HPI checked it thoroughly before I bought it and that was clear.

I was wondering if I source a set of 4 pots for it from somewhere, would it then take the 276mm discs, do the calipers sit further off the hub than the ones I have?

Please help

Nice one thanks, I think the two available for it are 276mm and 260mm. As the 276mm discs dont fit I assume mine are 260mm which is around what I measured them to be. If you can get a price for me that would be great, thanks

if you are measuring them up at 260mm then someone has fitted N/A brakes at some point??
ALL early turbo cars have the 2pot 276mm brakes as std

Well I don't understand it as its definitely a turbo (got a TD05) and the replacement calipers I ordered from a 96 turbo saloon fitted straight on but only with the discs I had on already, not the newer ones. If I got 4 pots what size would they take, I'm just wondering because if it should have 276mm discs now but both sets of calipers I have only take up to 260mm then surely whatever else I fitted would be smaller?

both my93 and my96 use the 260mm discs with 2 pot calipers and both turbo's.

i can get the discs cheap enough but postage might cost a bit but i cant remember how heavy the discs are. how much are you being quoted for the larger discs so i know what kind of price range we have to make it worth the while (no point me sending them if you can get them cheaper locally)

just to confirm you need 260mm front discs which are vented?

Well I paid £49.99 from Jap-tech (very helpful guys) for the larger discs with £10 postage. Yeah they are 260mm and vented. I don't suppose you might be able to work out a price for the rear ones also, just so I know I can get them but I don't know what size they are

Does anybody know if I could fit 4 pots to my car and what size discs I might need for that?

rear discs are a cu*t lol my work only lists solid discs for the rear so i bought them when i got them home i noticed mine was vented and hard as hell to get a hold of.

we finally got a set of vented rears which would cost £30 + postage
if its solid rear discs i still have a set here

front discs i'd take a rough guess and say about the same price as the rears

for front and rear discs and postage your not gonna be more than £100 hope this help mate

you can fit 4 pots with the larger discs but you will need a spacer kit so the calipers sit further out to fit the discs iirc

4 pots dont come cheap tho

From what I remember the Sport has 260mm disk and 1-pot calipers while the Turbo has 277mm disk and 2-pots. I have a 97 Sport and swapped from 1-pots to 2-pots using a discs, pads, calipers.

They work very nicely with Mintex 1155 pads.

well at my work the system lists 260mm and 277mm for scoobys upto 96 and from 96 on are just 277mm.

both my scooby has 260mm discs and has to of been factory fitted.

so if your interested mate gimme a shout.

there is so many options with impreza brakes, engine parts etc but i know 100% i can get the right discs as have just changed discs, pads and shoes on both cars

Thanks for your help adzer, I'd be lost without this site. I'll have to see about getting some money together and get the correct discs ordered most likely from yourself. I'll check my rear discs when I swap my wheels to find if they're vented or not

All this has got me wondering, what is it that sets the size of the disc needed? Is it the wheel hub and how far off that the caliper sits or is it the length of the caliper arms that are bolted to the hubs?

its the overall size of the disc mate from one edge to the other.

if your rear discs are solid i can throw in a fitting kit for the rear calipers as its no use to me either lol.

if you want a price for front discs pm me on monday and i'll check at work.

this site has came in handy for me too

Sorry I think I worded that all wrong. I was wondering by looking at pictures of the standard calipers and the 4 pots, where they bolt onto the wheel hub the 4 pots have longer arms which seems to push them further away from the wheel hub to fit the larger discs in. Now is it where the mounts are on the wheel hub that dictates how far from the centre of the hub the calipers sit or is it something else. I was just curious as I might just consider fitting newer wheel hubs if need be

i'm not 100% sure mate but i do know that with the bigger disks the calipers use different pads and i'm thinking the hub is the same but the caliper would be bigger. bigger discs = bigger pads bigger pads = bigger calipers

would be much easier and cheaper changing the disks but if you have plenty money go for 4 pots

I think I'll have to settle with just changing the discs for now but I just wish it was a bit easier sourcing the parts. I bought a pretty standard UK model so I wouldn't have this problem and my previous car ( a seat cordoba) gave me nothing but headaches when trying to source parts. Part of me almost wishes I didn't hate Ford's so much, plenty of them knocking about for spare parts

Very true, haha. I will try organise a refund from the company I originally got the discs from and I will let you know on monday about the discs and other bits you said you had. If you have any other scooby parts available PM me with the details, I get paid monthly and my car gets a fair wad of that every month at the mo. Thanks for all your help adzer and others

Hi
As Alyn above has said , the turbo model was never fitted with 260mm discs , only the Impreza sport was , I can only guess that someone has had a problem with the original brakes , and bought some second hand and fitted them , you should have 277mm discs and 2 piston calipers.

They are scary brakes with the 277mm ones , cant imagine what yours must be like !

The hubs are basically all the same , so all the brakes are interchangable , you can fit any brakes , from the sport 260mm , to the early 277mm turbo 2 pots , to the 294mm later 4 pots and even the brembo set up with 326mm discs , the later brembo's had a different stud pattern but this only means having the discs re-drilled to suit.

The only limiting factor stopping you fitting brakes on is wether they will fit under your wheels

Hope this helps
Cheers Ian

Thanks for the info Ian Godney, thats what I was looking for. So as long as the hubs are all the same (which I assume they are, I can get calipers off any model to fit. Its strange though that the replacement calipers I received for my car were taken from another 96 Turbo (it was definitely a turbo) and they would only fit the discs I already had on the car and not the 276mm ones i ordered
