Hi All
Im a newbie as i have only just got my Impreza this morning, a 97 WRX, done a swap deal and my car as explained was not perfect and neither is the scooby so am prepared to pay a bit out to get things fixed as im keeping it. the main thing at the minute is when on boost but not all the time there is like a whining/hooting noise which i am guessing is something to do with the Turbo?
Hopefully somebody can point me in the right direction as i am sure i have heard of this problem before but can not remember the cause.

Sounds like the dump valve is leaking, it is a known problem with the MY97's standard part.

could also be the up-pipe to turbo gasket leaking
