I've got a v5 type R and the big ends have gone. Its fine on tickover, but once you rev in it to 2500rpm it clonks badly. It sounds like the right bank. I've been told re-building is not a good option(£5000+). A new block is around £2800 plus fitting (£3500+). Does anyone know if i can do it cheaper and do v3 & v4 engines fit to v5 ancillaries. HELP i cant afford to fix it. Any ideas welcome. I know it sound bad but what about thick oil and part ex it.

It shouldn't cost anywhere near £5000 for a rebuild. If its only a big end gone, then you will probably get away with a crank regrind, new shells, full gasket kit. With labour about 1500-2000 max. Depends if there is anything else wrong, but even a full rebuild (rebore, pistons etc) shouldn't be more than about £3000 (if you know the right people to ask) .

I would be able to rebuild your engine for you far cheaper, If you want tell sell it on the other hand let me know i am intereasted.

I build the engines for the subaru world rally team at prodrive, so it wont be hard to do.

Get in touch if you want

Sorry to hear about your engine. I also have engine problems at the momment so I know how you feel.

Dave West (Princes Risbourgh) and Steve Lawson (Croydon/London)
are both highly recommended Subaru mechanics who undertake rebuilds.
Depends what needs doing, you don't know untill the engine is stripped down. But expect a bill of perhaps around 2k not 5k

Some times worth getting a recon engine from Grade A Subaru. I would take your mechanics advice on this one he has looked the damage.

Prodrive Luke sounds quite handy to know, who posted earlier.

E-mail me if you want more phone numbers and info.

Cheers
Steve

Sorry to hear all the problems you are having with your engines - we mainly only deal with the motorsport side of Subaru Impreza's but it sounds like you are being quoted far too much to repair a standard engine. A motorsport engine comprising of steel rods, cossie pistons, big ends, mains, gaskets etc etc - removal and installation only costs £3500.00 + VAT.

If you want to give me a ring I have a couple of second hand Version 5 engines but a heap load of second hand parts for them, and would only be too willing to help out.
