Default Oil temp 70-80, on boost drops to 50, is this normal?

Hi

Just fitted an Oil temp gauge and it reads 70-80 while driving on a short trip, but on boost drops to 50 and then goes back to 70-80, is this normal? Car is my00 classic turbo running Silkolene ProS 10w-50 oil.

Cheers in advance

Sounds a bit strange! On boost, with the engine working harder, you expect the oil to get hotter. Once at normal temp. (on my STi that's 90-95) it will only drop if on light throttle cruise in cool weather, and then only to around 85

Is it an electrical gauge ?

Is it in the airflow at the front of the engine ?

?

My oil temps on my bugeye generally stay around 85-88 pootling around but rise pretty quickly when on boost to 95-97..... by then if I don't slow down I'll run into slower moving traffic !!

Not on a track....just on the local roads

Is it conected OK ?

It's a electric stepper motor gauge, connected above cylinder 3. Going to check the connections tonight. Had another thought last night which was i was driving at night so the gauge was lighting up amber instead of white so going to try it again in the daytime to see if it's something to do with the live feed for lights on, which is coming from the hazard light switch.

defo got to be a wiring snag, otherwise you have probably the only engine which gets colder when worked harder

i grabbed the stepper gauges too, sure you haven't plugged you oil pressure sender into your temp? Identical connection. I think pressure was black, temp blue and boost white :0)

Oddly my pals TDI Ibiza ( re-map of course ! ) did this, but the sensor is right at the front of the engine, fitted a stainless intake shield and then it made some sense !

tbh i think you'll prob find its a fault with the gauge. if the temps shooting around with the boost then def a gauge error, takes a good few mins for the oil to change as much as your describing.

Pulled the gauge out yesterday, all connection were in. Disconnected everything and reconnected it, went out for a ride and the temp is no longer dropping when on boost Must have been a bad connection even though everything was clipped in. Fingers crossed it will continue working.

Cheers for the replys.
