As said above if you want the absolute best then go for Motul, Mobil one or Silkolene.

My view though is that's all an neccassary extra cost.
I've used a 10/40 semi synth at £15 for 5 litres. Been using ir for the last five years with no probs on my cars ranging from 300 to my now 500bhp daily driver. Threads like this are a minefield so be prepared for lots of contradicting replies.

I'm happy with my choice as it copes with plenty of red lining @500bhp.

I will add I do change it fairly regularly though.

Not another oil question ... If there are so many responses that give you unclear answers what makes you think you will get a clear answer now? Not trying to be argumentative but this has been responded to hundreds of times. Look at those responses and make a decision based on those as you won't be getting much better responses now....

There are loads of responses you can find from a search here are just a few

I'm with the middle of the road oil guys here. I use Mobil 10-40 from Halfords (mainly because I have a trade card so it's cheap) and change it every 3k.

If you do track days, change the oil before, and then after, but again, no need to go mad in my view with getting the most expensive there is.

It seems that many people kid themselves into thinking it's going to make their engine bullet proof by using stupidly expensive oil. Free world and all that, fair play if you want to fork out for it but I know I would rather spend my cash on something more worthwhile.

I would say though, that going too cheap can also be a problem. Don't be too put off by 'non branded' oil's though as I doubt Halfords have their own refinery. There are other threads about who supplies their oils but I can't remember who now.

As I said, Mobil is a trusted brand that Halfords sell, and I can get cheap, therefore I buy that with a view to changing it regularly without feeling like I'm wasting money and under no illusions that the super expensive stuff makes my car a racer

Well said

Searching is a useful tool but if we all did it then only new stuff would be discussed which would be boring.

I use motul 300v 15w50 but then again my car only does between 6 an 7k miles/yr, generally i change it every 4-5,000 mile so cost aint really an issue at 1 or maybe 2 changes a yr-definately rate it though seems to give a lot better cold protection than others at the same grade-always ran it on 15w50 just different manufacturers stuff-this definately made mine run better when cold-dont get me wrong still got the usual crap runnin till its warm but felt smoother-hard to explain but were a noticeable difference on mine in comparison to the silkolene i used previous,so ive kept using it, 30,000 mile later never had an engine problem at all-just a maf sensor.

depends on the driving, if you are going to use it as a normal driver with the odd fast road driving here or there then go for the 2 below:

Mobil super s 10w 40 semi
Valvoline durablend 10w 40 semi for tough conditions

if you drive like a loon and love racing then:

mobil 1 motorsport 15w 50
motul 300v 15w 50
silkolene pro s 10w 50
millers 10w 60
castrol edge sport 10w 60

the semi's above will do nicely as long as changed every 6 months £20 to £25 a gallon whereas the racing ones are like 50 quid a go,,, up 2 u tho but id say semi syn all the time with regular changes

and to be honest id only ever use the racing ones in the summer or on a track day

dont bother with the flush. most on here advise against using it as they say it can cause big problems on a scooby engine
