has my bottom end gone ?
driving down the m5 Sunday i noticed a noise coming from the engine, i slowed down and i took the car out of gear to see if it would go away and the car cut out, pulled over had the aa out and they said dont drive it so i had to get the car recovered
(i got a few peeps of fellow subaru drivers whilst broke down )
i have got the car to start. there is a quiet rattling sound constantly, which gets louder and faster as i lightly rev it, plus there is a louder knocking sound at the same time, can anybody tell me what it may be? new engine?? rebuild ??
its a 1995 wrx subtle mods, done about 90k. thanks in advance

It does sound like a bottom end rattle from what you say.
Outside chance it could be a cam follower rattling but not from your description.
It goes without saying that the AA guy is right, don't drive it until you check out what the cause of the rattle is.

Most likely bottom end . If you are planning on keeping the car speak to David at API about a rebuild. If you are keeping the car try not to get a replacement second hand engine as most will be on the way out with no gurantees etc and you will only be paying out twice.

Oh the joys of a bottom end rattle. Mine went a month or so ago and its the worst sound you can hear. Its not going to be cheap for you to repair (that is if is is the bottom end) so shop about at places that have reputation for rebuilds.
Good luck with fixing it mate

ok thanks guys, with it been 1995 it is getting on abit i was thinking of breaking it but i recently facelifted the front end which wasnt cheap, maybe go for a forged engine if i do decide to keep it. if i did go for an uprated engine would i have to change the gearbox ? thanks again
