Default water gushing from condenser?

I was with my freind in his wrx 96 import and after warming the car properly etc and after a few miles gave it some beans down a dual carridge way but when we arrived at his house noticed smoke coming from the front of the car and popping the bonnet showed there was coolent everwhere?
The condeser in front of the rad showed where the coolant came from there are two closed tubes either end on the top sides of the condenser and the drivers side tube has got a hole in it and theres water all over the under side of the bonnet so it looks like it blew with some force?

What in hell would cause this?

How much are they to replace and is it a hard job to DIY?

Thanks
