Help Me please - Broken Down Scooby
Thought my First post wouldnt of been this.....
My P plate Impreza broke down today after me fitting new tyres. Great
Right the problem
Left the car idling outside the shop. came back to the car an the needle was up at hot - Not right up tho a wee bit below it.
So i turned it off an noticed a puddle of rusty coloured water under the car.
The car has not been "burning" water if that makes sense since i got the car on Sunday - The lad i got it off drove up from Doncaster.
I refilled the car with water fired it up an it was fine but no water coming out. Got about 1/2 mile towards the garage an the needle moved up to 3/4 so i stopped an it was pouring water out the bottom it looked like. Seems to be just when its idling.
The heaters were cold for a few mins then went boiling. I managed to drive 1 1/2 mile to the garage an the temp sat normal - Wierd
The mechanic said the radiator is cold an it could be the Thermostat is buggered. He is checking it tomorrow.
Also we opened the radiator an it was spewing water out.
He said worst case is the head gasket is gone but it could just be the thermostat....................
Great start to Impreza ownership - Not the previous owners fault tho. **** happens.
Hopefully just the thermostat
Just thought i would share this with you all
Anyone fancy putting my mind at rest lol as im crapping it

Connor with car running squeeze the top radiator hose, if it is solid and highly pressurised then there is a fair chance the head gasket may have gone. If not you have a problem of some sort in the cooling cct. I take it there are no leaks around the radiator end tanks?
If not take the thermostat out completely put everything back together and try again if everything is ok and there are no issues due to over heating then you know you just need a thermostat.

The radiator would spew out water because the car was boiling hot, that is entirely normal. Your head gasket is most likely fine. I went through a multitude of overheating problems when I got car, ranging from cracked hoses to a cracked rad to a blocked thermostat, headgasket was still fine.
And the needle being halfway is not a very good indicator sometimes, if there is no water in the system, the temp might show normal when it is severely overheated.
After the thermostat is fixed, inspect your hoses carefully, it's very likely some will have been pushed to failure by the high pressures and temps during overheating.

I remeber him saying the radiator was cold.
The fan was on aswell.
The expansion tank was not empty at all i made sure of that i drove ti in short bursts as the garage was just up the road so i gave her time to cool down.
None of the hoses were hard.........
Thanks for the information people. Im crapping it. Owned my dream car for a day an its fuggered lol Also just got 2 new tyres fitted last night
Edit
The mechanic said he was going to run it with no thermostat to check if that was the problem aswell. The car WAS NOT smoking or any of that

it just got a new waterpump an cambelt in the past 2 months mate
Well i have been speaking to alot of people an they seem to think its defo not the head gasket. But its just a waiting game as the garage have the car.
If it is the head. I will get it done straight away regardless of cost as its worth it i my opinion :-)

If the top hose wasnt pressurised it will most likely be that the head gaskets and the heads are ok but it is really only an indication. With the cap to the expansion tank off and the car running can you see water flowing back into the expansion tank, if so then the pump is probably ok. The fact that the radiator was cold would make me suspect the thermostat is stuck closed. So running without the thermostat should give you a short term fix.
