Should I scrap my car..?
My '99 Prodrive Impreza Turbo AWD recently overheated (43,000m) and as a result has damaged both cylinder heads and done some piston damage too. I've had it looked at by an approved Subaru garage who reckon it needs a new engine which they quote as about 2K, plus labour and other bits and pieces (full details of quote are at work) comes to around £5K.
I bought the car in April '07 for ~£7K so wanted suggestiopns (realistic!) about what my options are - am thinking a) scrap it for parts b) by a re-con engine (from a cheaper dealer) and sell it, or c) ..?
The rest of the car is in good shape so don't know what to do...Naturally I'm absolutely gutted so any help gratefully received.

it does not cost 5k for rebuild and bits and bobs??? there robbing you blind.
If you want to keep the car now is the best time to do a proper rebuild, upgrated internals.
speak to scoobyclinic and ask what your options are going the rebuild way, but do remmber the clinic dont add V.A.T till you pay. So what ever is quoted add 17.5%.
And sorry to here your badluck with the engine.

Here is another idea, just add your intake manifold to it

Buy a used UK engine with 6 months warranty like Stevebt says.
I would use someone like Penninesubaru rather than Scoobyclinic if you want to go down the rebuild path. My mate's STI rebuild cost 2.5k inc new new crank, forged pistons, uprated bearings etc. You can save some cash by taking the lump out yourself as he did.
Also depends on were you live I suppose. Try HDCSubaru as well. Do not be conned into paying silly money, you can run these cars cheap if you just shop around.

It can be caused by an airlock in your water system my mate's 98 model did the same, (the sensor see's air, not coolant which is hotter) the temperature guage went straight up to red and the car cut out.
He started it up 10 mins later and drove it home all ok. Re-bled the coolant system afterwards and it all worked out ok.
I think he said it was cos the header tank is pressurised, therefore opening it when its running lets air in...? Sommat like that anyway!

I had my MY00 UK model engine completely rebuilt by HDC for under 2.5K. That had a recin short motor direct from Subaru. Howard will not mess you about.
Don't break it, keep it..!!
If by chance you still want to break it can I have first shout on the prodrive back box.............

Oh, and in answer to what happened - it overheated (no prior warning lights) on the motorway; I noticed the temp had gone thorugh the roof in a very short time and I lost power at about 80mph in 4th; from that the engine started cutting out and when I pulled over and lifted the lid there was coolant leaking from the hose/inlet reservoir join next to the headlight bay and left a big puddle underneath the car...

And I was on my way to my best mate's wedding with the best man (me), the groom and the head usher in the car! Arrived at some posh abbey in Bucks with my car on a flat bed with 15 minutes to spare!
