starting a new engine
Hi all i have just finished rebuilding my engine and im just about to start it for the first time.
Is there a special procedure for this or do you just crank it for a while?

Deffo worthwhile fitting an oil pressure gauge, although on the two builds ive done i never saw much oil flow past the gallery that oil pressure sender sits in just by cranking it over, the gauge instantly showed good pressure when sender fitted in gallery and engine fired up though.
Dont think the engine turns fast enough via the starter motor to get good pressure.
Also a good idea to let the fuel system prime, by turning the ignition on, and checking for leaks etc.....

Use a jump pack or extra battery for improved cranking power.
Remove plugs, disconnect cam and crank sensors, and spin over for a few repeated bursts. - You may/may not be able to build enough pressure to extinguish the oil warning light on the dash.
When you do fire the motor, make sure the oil light goes out as soon as it starts to run.
Warm the engine up to operating temperature, whilst checking for leaks.
As soon as you're happy, get it out on the road and under some load in order to bed in the rings. - You'll do more harm than good if you just run it for ages in neutral.
You'll only need to keep the revs up to 2000rpm for the first 15 minutes if you are bedding in brand new camshafts.
