Bugeye Tuning Advice

Bugeye Tuning Advice
Afternoon,
Currently looking to buy a bugeye model impreza. I have tested both a WRX and an sti and have decided to buy a WRX as I prefer the slighty more subtle looks.
Is it worth me paying extra for the ppp equiped cars? or would it be better if I spent the difference on having a standard low miler remapped to the same kind of power level? The difference seems to be about £1000, which I could spend on a remap and replacement cat back exhaust.
Any thoughts would be welcome.

If I remember correctly the Bugeye had a nasty little Gems board in the ECU rather than an ECUTek'd ECU as per the later cars.
PPP Bugeyes don't really seem to make a lot more than standard hence I'd save a grand and spend it on a map and exhaust/decat up pipe.

A grand isn't going to get a lot if you go down the remap route, because you'll need £500-600 for the ecutek licence and mapping i would have thought. Still, it'll give you a better platform to add further mods to
Oh, and i bought a WRX, and then wished i'd bought an STI

The only two PPP Bug eyes I've seen on the rollers were within 10bhp of standard. The standard blob eye PPP I've see made 260bhp. Seems at least one other person on here has been a bit disapointed with PPP Bugeye performance as well.
FWIW I like the stealth aspect of my WRX estate. Doesn't even have the flaired arches!

Thanks for the input, I may well go for a later STI, money was not the issue for choosing the bugeye model, the fact was I wanted to avoid paying £400 tax to the theiving government in a couple of years, but in the scale of it £200 extra is not a vast amount.
Still gets my goat tho'

the bug eye is post 2001 so in the new tax banding anyway, so you may as well get an sti, and theres plenty of blobeye (2003-2005)sti's about goin cheap if you like that shape too.i was tryin to sell mine but i'd lose too much on it so im keepin it cuz i love it.
its a real buyers market at the minute
but get an STi,and if you want the small spoiler off a wrx, you will have NO problem sellin your STi one and pickin up one off a wrx

Definitely go for the STI. They're not that much more expensive and the difference in price is a fraction of the upgrades you need to do to get the WRX up to STI standard (I speak from bitter experience here).
If I had had paid more for the STI and spent the remainder of the difference between my WRX+mods on mods for the STI, I'd be well into the 400's with a gearbox and engine that could take the power. The STI's seem to make better power than WRX's as well with the same mods, as the heads are better (AVCS).

Have a bugeye wrx wagon, needed space in the boot. Now running 333/310 but has cost about £2k to get there. Makes for a very quick car but if i had the same knowledge now i would have gone sti route as everything is that little bit stronger (and be damned to boot space - bloody fishing and golf!).
Is very stealthy though until you see "perfomance enhanced by jollygreenmonster" stickers

I believe it's only the JDM ones that fall into this bracket as when imported it goes on the manufacture date in Japan and they built the bugs for their market first.

Buy an sti . I had a 2002 wrx and was kicking myself two weeks after i bought it . I now have a hawkeye sti and wish that i'd bought the sti first time round . Much better allround car from standard .

The standard parts can't be that great or people with STI's would never upgrade! I'd still consider a WRX and upgrade it to your specification with the cash you'll save over an STI.

The driveline is a *lot* better on the STI, though. The gearbox is a lot stronger, and this alone costs at least 2000 to rectify on a WRX (and that's with a replacement STI box which is good for at least 500bhp) and the heads on the STI are a lot better.

From a WRX owner - go for the STI. The only reason I have the WRX is because I really wanted a wagon - needed to fit kids bikes in etc. and it looks better than your saloons
Seriously, if you are looking for a sharper and quicker car with better brakes go for the STI, especially if money isn't an issue. If you are looking for something a little more comfortable which still has a decent turn of speed and is more fun than your average saloon, go for the WRX.
