Surging Acceleration (again)
#1
Why is it doing this again... (UK300).
6 weeks ago the acceleration on my car started coming on in surges (or pulses) in 4th and 5th. At the 15K service I asked Subaru to look at it, they reset the ECU and it went away. 3 weeks later ie last night, it started doing it on my way home again., I only use the same two garages for fuel so I don't think it's that. I also fill our RB5 up at the same places and that doesn't do this. Any ideas what this is? Well hacked off it's doing it again..
Cheers, Sean

Sorry Sean can't help but my MY00 UK turbo does this as well!! Is most prominent in 2nd or 3rd gear at anything from 2-3000 rpm when cold. Garage had a look last time it was in but they couldn't get it to do it.
Does it every time with me and is well annoying.

Yea mine's doing something similar at the moment too (MY99). More prominent when cold, but the acceleration is lumping especially between 2-3k revs. You put you're foot down and it pulls in spurts. It's been doing it since I recently had my "oxygen" sensor replaced.
It improves when its warm (but this takes a good 5-10 mins) and it ok when I absolutely cane it

My MY99 occassionally does the same when cold, and has done since new. It has been discussed at length on this board and is referred to as the throttle hunting/seeking problem.
As I remember its down to the ECU trying to respond to cold conditions as auto-choke is changing.
I've only experienced for short periods (minute or so) and it disappears when warm.
I don't believe it to be a problem - more a known issue.

Seamus,
I had a similar problem on my MY98. Couldn't get it sorted even though *I* believed it was an ECU problem. Anyway I got fed up and decided to change the ECU by way of having a PPP fitted and that was last June and the car has not done it since. Don't know if it is relevant to you but hope the information helps

Robin,
It started doing it about 4-5K after I had the PPP fitted (7.5K service), at my 15K service they reset the ECU (apparently) and it went away. At about 16.5K it came back again! I must admit it isn't as bad this time but it's still there..
