Default Classic STi RA track build

Hello

I'm looking to buy a classic STi III onwards RA in the next month or so for use as a track car. I've had an impreza before so I'm aware of most of the basics.

A few questions for you...

* Are they prone to oil surge/starvation with hard track use? I plan slicks and decent suspension, so my head is saying 'yes'! Is a baffled sump a must have? Are there trap door type kits available off the shelf for decent prices.

* Stock TMIC and heat soak - how bad on track with about 400bhp? (that kinda the power I'll aim for... for now. Ebay FMIC kits ok for the price?

* Wheels - Will 9" wide 17's fit with minal arch bashing? I know 17's will go on but what is the max width/decent offset combo? Are any arch extensions available off the shelf? (i.e to trim back the metal, and flare out)

* Fuel Surge - had it in our old one, with minal track effort... so guess its a large problem. Swirl pot, external 2nd pump needed etc.

* Suspension - anti lift, drop links, ARB's yup... but what coilovers are out there that suit the car with hard track work? I've got TEIN Super Racing Circuit Master on the Skyline, but not wanting to spend that much on the Impreza.... I'm not looking for crap like TEIN flex either though.

* Weight Saving - Without going bananas on carbon body panels etc whats a realistic weight target for stripping and chopping out excess metal? (add cage, remove std door bars, parts of dash, all trim, sound deadning etc)

anything anyone else can add? Any pearls of wisdom from folk that have been there and done that? Whats not worth doing, what is?

Thanks for any replies

Question

Adam

Have you seen Rob4620's post in the Projects section?

Title is "hillclimbing-2007-season-project", sadly Rob is having to sell his car, but he has posted some great stuff with regard to weight saving on his RA.

Although his car is prepared for sprints and hillclimbs, I am sure you find some useful information.

Makes a good read.

Take a look at

API Engines

It's just had a full front and rear transmission rebuild and is ready to go racing tomorrow, A very good car with bags more potential.

Thanks.

Nice car, nice spec - but i'm not looking to spend that much initially (i know its much cheaper to buy that than build)... but this will be a 2nd track car for me, and so Fee can maybe rest the skyline for TimeAttack LOL

https://www.scoobynet.com/trader-ann...p-baffles.html

SM engineering do a very nice tall and slim swirl pot for not a lot of money for the boot, or a small version which can be fitted under the bonnet saving the need for a firewall in the back.

The front mount intercooler kits on Ebay are ok, should you wish to make it better though, sell the core on and 2fast2cool on Ebay are currently selling 31x12x4 inch cores for £115 delivered.

Have a word with Kev at Apex re the suspension.

good read on that sump thread I think a baffle that directs oil to the pick up would be better maybe....

Yes but all hot water in the end, turned out all that was wrong was a cracked pick up pipe, nothing wrong with the baffle at all.
Perfect example of how the internet can spread rumour and incorrect assumptions, aswell as good advice.

martin - ja, I read to the end, but still seems to me its no a proper baffle in the way i want it to be. Keeping oil in the centre of the sump.
