Question MY98 uk turbo running REALLY hot - any ideas?

well as above my car has just started running really hot and is down on power. is this a common problem or do i have issues? it did it a couple of weeks ago when i was stationary the guage shot right up (much higher than it normally goes when stationary) but as soon as i was on the move it went back down to normal again but today on the way home from work the guage was all over the place and i am lacking alot of power. its running hot whether im moving or stationary. sometimes the guage will go back down to normal for around a minute (but still lack power) but then just shoots up again. also a couple of days ago my fans stopped blowing out hot air, it will only blow hot on very rare occations now dont know if that may be related?
so does anyone have any suggestions as to what the problem may be? thanks in advance!

As above: check your oil for signs of "mayonnaise", a sort of whitish suspension.
Check also the coolant filler: mine was coated with the stuff

Edited to say: it could also be the thermostat sticking shut.......MUCH cheaper

Could be a number of problems before diagnosing Head gasket.Try and get it to a garage who knows what their doing. Maybe a compression test would tell. Could be water pump, thermostat, airlock, blocked rad.

well, i took the thermostat out the other day and tested it in boiling water and it didnt open so i brought a new one and put it in but it was still getting hot and chucking the water out the overflow so for now i have cut the middle out the old thermostat and put that back in so its effectively running with no thermostat at the moment but it is running absolutely spot on. whats going on?

I would put the new stat back in (test to make sure that works first) and then refill the coolant have you heaters set to hot etc to bleed out any air in the system. Then take it for a spin and see what happens then.

This happened to mine, the thermostat stopped opening and it boiled itself including the oil and the block around the cylinder liners were damaged beyond repair. The reason my thermostat failed is coz soon tit put it in the wrong way round so the water was effecitvely pushing it shut instead of pushing it open

Ye tell me bout it, i just bought the car my mate drove the last hundred odd miles after i drove a few hundred and he didnt watch the temp gauge and melted the engine. I had someone look at it we thought it was the water pump so got a new one, after taking it apart as i watched him put it back together we thought the thermostat wasnt the right way but he said that was the way it came out, so then we realised why the engine had failed all because someone put it in back to front, the spring side of the thermostat was facing the rad and not waterpump

My FTO did a similar thing and it's a common problem on them - the heater matrix goes and the car temp shoots up - the only reason I mention it is because you mentioned your heaters too...I had smoke coming out mine when it happened! lol
Lost all coolant and had to bypass the matrix with a wee T Pipe till I got a replacement matrix. Not sure if Scoobies work the same but I just mentioned it in case it helps

Ditto. Had to replace the entire radiator and it solved the problem.
