Default What engine

ok well if decide to keep my wrx i will be looking into a rebuild in 6 months or so.
What engine do i go for i want somthing that doesnt need big boost to get to around 400 bhp, i also want to be able to push the block further if i get bord with 400 bhp, i want good response but i want a good kick to if you get me.
and also roughly how much would it cost to have it rebuilt and fitted.
plus what heads do i stick with my v3 wrx heads or get a set of sti heads and cams.
Thank in advance Anthony

a nice 2.5 conv plus supporting mods will get a good bhp with torque to match it. your wrx heads are at there limit with 400bhp.

all depends what your after. i've done 2.5 conv on my 97 wrx and i think its more than enough for the road its only on standard turbo but 440 injectors.

i've been about 4k doing that. ej257 bottom end from rcm with omega pistons, oil pump, sump, water pump, arp head bolts, 3 layer metal cometic head gaskets, pulleys, uprated timing belt, fuel pump. think thats all.

but then you need clutch etc if you don't have a good one already. gearbox is under strain at that bhp.

money can be endless if you want. depends where you want to stop.

and ive been told the they dont accelerate the same with a 6speed

That 5 speed box isnt as good as the 6 speed box, the ratio's are longer meaning not as quick, though 0-60 means you normally have to hit 3rd in the 6 speeder, after that its far better for midrange punch
Your other option is a 2ltr engine out of an STi, good for 400bhp and probably cheaper than a 2.5 rebuild with uprated internals, though it all depends on your budget.

well im unsure as to what im budgeting for tbh i need to settlin at my new job.
but i dont know if im gonna say what can i get for this i just wanna save and get what i want, but im just gonna play with whats in it at the same time see what stick it can take.
Its and 86k car ive had it 10 months and i have give some greif theres two ways in and out my aera and there both a spirted drive so it tends to get punnished every day for atleast 10 mins ether way.
its great one ways is nice and open the others tight and twisty and its still going strong, but it does get an oil change when ever im bord becuase i have lots of it.

A 2.5 will run to just on 400bhp with no internal mods, many people are running that.

The 5 speeder will struggle to cope with the amount of torue it could make, although if you have it mapped to keep torque artificially lower than it could make it will probably be 'OK' as long as you look after it.

i would say once i get my apexi ecu and set up then that will have cost me £4500 all in for everything.

thats a semi closed deck block so good for a few more horses.

is that a 2.5 Where have you had the work done and what internals do you have.

and also how realible would you say a 2.5 closed deck or semi closed deck would be of bought brand new on stock internals running 400 bhp.

well i believe at that bhp pretty reliable.

yeah i bought the, ej257 semi closed deck from roger clark motorsport. they recommeded the crank and rods were good enough and to fit omega pistons. so i did.

they built to engine for rally cars that spec and say they are fine.

bottom end came up built and i took the engine out myself and swapped all the bits myself.

engines in and done 450miles all seems well. running it off boost till its run in and set up.

forgot to say, at 400bhp you will most likely have around 400ft/lbs as well wiht right mods.

need a very good clutch, standard 5 speed box will be destroyed in seconds.

hence im keeping mine around the 300bhp mark. im running an excedy organic clutch.

how much further do you want to be able to push it? ej257 wont go much beyond 460-470bhp before it breaks apart, several folks have tried it and just doesn't seen to take it.

possible option is 2.33 closed deck block, but it starts to get pricey, need to decide how far you may want to go but also how deep are your pockets?

FT/lbs of torque is what makes your car responsive off the line.

over 400 bhp etc is getting into very large sums of money to upgrade everything else to take it.

yup, as nam said, the cost per bhp extra sky rockets after a certain point, and that is about 400bhp.

if you want value for money then prob the best engine out there is scoobyclinics sc450, 12k for engine, box and clutch iirc, with proven reliability. if you went to scoobyshootout this year you'd have seen the 4 year old development engine pull a 22b to within 0.8 of the gobstopper on the handeling circuit.
