Default Dreaded Mot Emissions fail!!!

Hi all

Took my car for mot today and it failed on Emissions!!!
I have a 1995 Wrx Sti, the co figures were pretty high.

I have done a search and found that most people replace the Lambda and Spark plugs?
Can someone tell me where I can get a Lambda that wont break the bank!!

Any Help would be greatly appreciated!!
By the way I leave in Leicester, somewhere local, so I can fit it asap would be useful!!

Kind Regards

Abs

Had the same on my mot, i have a full decat and the sensor was located in the manifold.
Borght universal from local motor factors £40, that was duff it rattled so got a refund. Got another off ebay £15, that lasted about 50 miles, got another from ebay (different seller) £15 same again, lasted bout 50 miles. So got another universal and fitted it in the top of the downpipe, sorted.
So cost me about £45 in all which is still cheaper than oe item. Hth.

I does have the cats in, it has a 3" cat back zorst, on natural idle test it is fine and within the limits.

On the fast idle the co was 93% the limit being 30!!
looking on the information sheet the lambda was showing as being fine, dont know how accurate these machines are, I know they have to be tested once a year.

The guy tried to warm up the car giving it a good thrashing in the process but upon trying again the co was still 81% so it had gone down but not enough.

The guy said the mixture was just too rich.

I have seen the cheap lambda's on ebay but dont want one that will last a week.

thanks for your comments guys

The CO limit isn't 30% its probably 0.30%, you can't have had 93%, but may have had 0.93%

That is only just rich of Lambda1 (0.67%) so not rich enough for it to the the 02 sensor, do you remember what the Lambda reading was.

Your right Simon looking at the figure again it is indeed 0.93 with a limit of 0.30.

okay the lambda reading on fast idle was 0.99 just within the 0.97-1.03 limit.

Today I pulled the lambda out and cleaned the end of it, it was not very sutty at all. I gave it a quick clean with a wire brush. I then removed the plugs and cleaned them also.
Took the car back for a second go and again came up with the same result 0.93 co.

Not looking good!!!

I think you are right... the 0.30% number is familiar though.
ISTR that the non-CAT number used to be 0.50% but it was reduced to 0.30% in 2004ish....

Or I'm talking crap.

ok this is going to sound silly!!

I have a digital rev counter thing but realised today after fiddling it is a SFC so I went back to the mot guy 3rd time today and showed him it.
We had a play with it and tried to reduce the fuel intake.

It worked for a bit but was not able to sustain it.
I drive the car home and it drives like a bag of S***!!

The SFC is well fiddly so I have had a search on the net and found a manual.
I found a on/off switch on the back of the unit. The car seems to be revving etc well without it on.

So I am going to go back tommorow with the unit off give it a go, and then have the unit reset.
As it was an absolute joy to drive pulled like a train.

Anyway will let you know how I get on and yeah would be nice to have a mr nice Mot man but with no tax dont fancy driving all over town!!

Thanks to all that have helped and replied

Fingers crossed

Kind Regards

Abs
