anyone?

I've read that up until 96 the ej20 was a clearance engine but then became a interference. what changed?

I've seen head gaskets listed which supposedly cover all ej20 variations.

Lastly I'm new to subaru's as you can probably tell, but has anybody on here successfully managed to fit the earlier type engine into the later car? If so how do you over come the differences in the idle control valve set up?
If i could get around this i wouldn't need to swap heads.

Are you saying you want to fit a 1999 engine into a 1996? If yes, then no it is not a straight fit, manifold stud pattern is different and wiring is different. What are you trying to do, has your engine gone pop?

Other way around mate 99 car/ 96 engine. I have dicovered the inlet stud patterns are ditterent but only after buying a engine and stripping everything off.
Does any one do a conversion plate or hybrid manifold? Or before i set about making one does anyone know of a reason it wouldn't work?
I have looked at changing the loom but that is a last resort as the engine and car looms look to be combined, both dash's would need removing i think.

Swap the heads over, to mess about with the manifold would be messy.

So the heads will straight swap then?
I dont want to waste time and money opening up a perfectly good early engine for no reason.

heads are straight swap, if you swap them, then your existing manifold loom etc all match up

you will waste alot more time and money trying to make the manifold fit, thats for sure! and you will have the peace of mind knowing you have new headgaskets fitted.

is there any way to determine whether the block is closed, semi or open deck without taking the heads off?

I've also been told the timing belt tensioner may be different, Can I bolt my tensioner to the engine instead of the other type?

Look for cross-hatching on the oil filter casting on the block - that wil be a CDB. Majority of MY96 blocks were open deck but will still take good power/torque if in good condition.
Tensioners are different between Phase 1 and Phase 2 engines but you can swap them over either way provided you use the mounting block also.
