Default Faulty MAF again?

A friend of mine was having a few problems with his 94 wrx including poor idle and when i drove it it was popping and banging holding back and the cel was flashing, I changed the maf for a good used item and it ran fine for a few days. Now it's started to run funny again? its fine on idle but as soon as you try to raise the revs it splutters and the cel flashes? I'm thinking the replacement maf has died? Any ideas people? Cheers Neil.
