Default PETROL CAP (HELP)

When i got my car last week i went to put petrol in and the lockable petrol cap wouldnt open for anything!

it locks, and when you remove the key u cant turn it (which is good)
But when you unlock the cap, it just spins and spins without coming off
(which is bad ) Because i cant put any juice in!!!

What would be the best way to remove the dam thing without bits dropping into my tank?

Or is there a 'special way' these come off?

IM NEARLY ON EMPTY

i had one that sounds like this once and you had to pull cap towards you as if your trying to pull it off ,you unlock it then it should stop spinning and turn to the left.. maybe the same try it failing that are you in aa or rac breakdown they have had this a million times im sure and must know every cap ....good luck .
