What Turbo to upgrade to??HELPPPP
Hi all,
I am currently looking for an upgrade in turbo on my wrx (2001). The car currently has a VF35 fitted but I fancy getting some more power out the car now.
The has recently had an STI 8 Bottom end fitted and I know they can take more than the 326bhp the car currently has.
I have had a look round the net and found a TD05 16 & 20g that are both good for 400bhp......Is this correct and would you recommend this turbo?
Thanks in advance for any answers.
Craig

I have STI Injectors fitted, warbo fuel pump, FMIC, uprated clutch and Ecutek Map. I agree with the gearbox. That was going to be my next question.....Any suggestions?

ive been told by a very good builder on here that a 20 g will not get you the 400 mark.you need to go down the md321h route to hit the mark

oh god. I am going to have to find out if they do because I don't want to buy a turbo that will not achieve the figure I want.
Anyone else back up what scoobyschef has said??

Would agree with Banny for what you want I'd go down the 20G route. You should see 380-390 Bhp with that sort of set up. I was running a AFP20G on my 04 sti and was producing around that mark. Makes for a quick road car.

Personally, I reckon your five speed will let go the first time you put your foot down! A 16G can eat a five speed box. If its a fit one and you drive it gently it may last a while though. The question is, can you afford the 2.5k you'd need to stick a 6 speed in there that will take it?
As for turbos, most 20Gs I've heard of don't reach 400, but with the correct supporting mods and/or a splash of the funny stuff, it can be done. Would help if you told us more about yours cars spec.

erm......sorry I should I have put this at the start. The current spec is as follows:
2001 WRX Bugeye
70k mileage
VF35 Turbo
STI Injectors
STI 8 Bottom end (Brand New from Subaru)
New Exedy Clutch
XS Power FMIC
Forge DumpValve
Warbo Fuel Pump
Janspeed Stainless
Full De-Cat
Vortex Afterburner Backbox
APS Induction Kit
Samco Hoses
Tein Strut Brace
ECUTEC Map - Tractive
326 bhp.
Is there anymore i need to put?
I am currently enquiring about a 6 speed box so I think i will go down that route so I can actually drive the car normally and not be scared of breaking it everytime it comes in boost.

Is your exhaust a 2.5" or 3" system?
Also - headers, if going for a 20G you may want to get ported headers to help spool. Or even a set of GT Spec headers.
There are different views to which are better for different set-ups.
I'll stay out of that as its been done to death in my eyes. Do a search and you will more than likely find several threads

Well, Since Andy F supplies the TD05 20G. It's a good idea to see what he says.
Taken from his site (interesting about the gearbox).
Note that the for the next power level up 390-420, he recommends the MD321H.
Level 3 360-390 bhp
Full Decat turbo back 3” bore exhaust system
Tubular exhaust headers and flow matched uppipe
Walbro 255 l/hr uprated fuel pump
K+N panel filter
EcuTek custom ECU calibration.
Twin boost set up for high/low power switchable in-car
550cc Multi Spray Injectors
Fuel Lab turbo specification fuel pressure regulator with fitting kit & gauge
STI TMIC from 01-06 STI including undertray
AFP 05-20G custom ported turbocharger modified to fit with TGV
NGK PFR 7B uprated spark plugs
Level 3 Power may shorten the life of the transmission system this will depend on use and driving style. The 01 onwards UK 5 speeds do currently seem to be coping well with this level of output although as mileage increases this may become more of an issue.
Level 4 390-410 bhp
Full Decat turbo back 3” bore exhaust system
Tubular exhaust headers and flow matched uppipe
Walbro 255 l/hr uprated fuel pump
EcuTek custom ECU calibration.
Twin boost set up for high/low power switchable in-car
STI TMIC from 01-07 STI including undertray
AFP 321H custom turbocharger with fitting kit
Twin port 650cc Injectors
Custom cold air induction system

TD05-20G in 99% of cases is a 380 hp turbo rarely more.

Its the correct answer though, it will cost alot more to modify a wrx to the standard that he wants than it will an STI, no point in talking turbo's if you then have to replace the rest of the car to keep up with it!

Im being deadly serious here and trying to save him a small fortune!
He has an STI bottom end, still on an open deck block?
No sign of uprated brakes
No 6 speed box or clutch for that extra power
Damn just add 5k there straight away...
You can only go so far with a wrx, those who have done it wish they had started with an STI to start with because its a damn sight cheaper
He is now at a stage where he has a nice modified wrx, that will sell and is reliable, but also at the stage where its going to become a total money pit for that 400bhp he is looking for, so do you think my advice is still unworthy? or am i actually doing him a favour by thinking outside the box and giving another option on where to go?
And just as an example, this is what you can get and be in a position to go for that 400bhp with a turbo (it has most of the supporting mods fitted )
Subaru : IMPREZA WRX Sti V7 - JDM - 27,000 MILES

Sorry dont get on the net at night.
In respect to a couple of the above question.
The car has uprated springs (eibach), but standard shocks.
The brakes are tarrox with red stuff pads. I was looking into uprating these anyway.
The exhaust is a 2.5" system but I have a lad who wants to swap me for his 3" system.
The clutch has been uprated to a fast road clutch.
With respect to being a money pit, the car is my pride and joy and i cant force myself to sell it. I like the fact that its a different colour to most subaru's (mica red) and love the look of it at the moment.
Here as she stands now:
I completly understand the views of getting an STI but i cant honestly bring myself to sell it so the only option is to get the bank card out and spend to archieve the 400bhp mark.
If what your saying about £5k then I will have to get to the 400bhp mark slowly, maybe stepping up to 370-380 first then make sure the car can cope comfortably with 400bhp.
All the above is much appreciated and any further info is good

I did the exact same thing mate.
I had a UK catalunya but wanted more power.
Went to an STI bottom end and VF35. P1 suspension and AP 4-pots
I recently fitted STI heads, 20G and a few other supporting mods.
Its now running 390BHP on v-power.
I have been constantly adding bits here and there to improve the car as I go.
I now have the car I wanted to keep with the spec I wanted.
I completely agree that it would have been cheaper to sell and buy an STI, but in many ways I am glad I did it the way I did. The car has grown with me and I still own my first scoob. I'ts also allowed me to learn:-
A) How to drive the car as it goes up in power levels
B) I have a much better understanding of the car as I have done alot of work myself and helped my mechanic where I could.
Thats my thoughts anyway.
