bottom end gone, thinking of 2.5. Anyone?
Anyone converted to a 2.5 lump on a wrx bugeye.
Trying to weigh up options and thinking of a 2.5.
problem is, i'm worried the added TQ from the 2.5 will blow the standard box up soon after.
im on a tight budget and will be getting friends to help put block in/rebuild.
not sure whether to get a 2.5 ready made, 2.0 forged ready made or buy in bits and rebuild.
was running 361/322 before it went but im aiming for 380/350 with an E85 Map
cheers for any help in advance.

Hi
I never looked back, but i had the same problem. At the time, i was running 409hp with 420 torque on a standard box which did'nt last long when i had the 2.5 fitted.
It then went through 2 more standard boxes! Then i opted for the 6 speed,8 miles dowm the road from having it fitted the clutch was ripped to bits!!.
Just my eperience, but looking back i should have just put a 6 speed in it from the off

It depends what turbo you bolt to it and what boost you run. If you limit the size/boost of the turbo and don't let the 2.5 play until you can afford a 6 speed or PPG gearset, then that'd be an option. I've been through this recently on my WRX blobeye. I went for the 2.5 with JDM 6 speed in the end as had the funds, but I know someone who was happy to go 2.5 with an 18g and has had great success with it, with the option to upgrade further as or when required.
Either way, the 2.5 is a no-brainer these days unless you have oodles of dosh for something more exotic.

Dave what model is your car ? I cannot find any mention of it to be able to advise whether a 2.5 is appropriate.
In some cases it causes more trouble than it is worth.
Generally, a 2.5 short motor will fit to any age of Subaru heads. Some times not very well and that is where the expertise of people like us come in and steer you down a path that will not cost an arm and a leg to get it to run right.
So many conversions get done with poor advice, that they either get left to run badly or sold on as an unfinished project, as the owner has run out of money.
Tell us what model you have, then we can all give relevant advice.
Good Luck, no matter what - David APi

Ah!, that 'll be the APi thought transfer technology. When you ring, our phone system captures your brain ferquency and then we can transmit messages back to it convincing you to spend money.
Sort of like the voodoo sticking pins in thing.
Some are more susceptible to it than others; eh, Pete/ Staffi

After few chats/emails with David, i'd be silly not to go 2.5conversion. The difference in TQ would be massive and I wouldnt have to go E85 route to get more out of 18g Turbo.
Just trying to get the pain of xmas out my hair. It will be done but when is another story.
Cant wait to have it back, missing her already and its only been 3 days

The torque should go through the roof but being on a TD05 / 18G the actual horsepower won't go up far.
I'd be happy to see 380 / 380 ish

That's a nice increase in torque I'm hoping to add around 100/100 to my set up this year, so it sounds like a 2.5 might be the way to go (for starters...)
