AIRLOCK OR GASKET
my vers 3 sti is doing my head in
sprung a leak in the rad the other day , temp went to the top for a short while (1/2 mile) now fitted another radiator + thermostat(new) but when i start the car there,s no heat inside unless i give her a bit of revs,,
the top rad hose heats up , as do the 2 pipes going to the heater matrix,,but the bottom rad hose stays cold and builds up pressure in the rad hoses,,its like the thermostat is not opening at all,,,,,,,
any ideas,

I have EXACTLY the same issue. My car gets a bit hot - 97deg C - but the needle doesn't go beyond middle, as per normal. I too have a hot top hose and a stone-cold bottom hose (a new rad was fitted recently too).
So I'm getting a new, cooler stat fitted, plus coolant change, tomorrow at Zen. If it's the stat that's stuck closed in my case, then I should have significantly reduced temps., as the new stat will open 7deg C earlier in addition!
If the temps don't change then, because I don't suffer any coolant loss at all, the most likely culprit is a broken water pump turbine... So that's what I reckon your diagnosis could be too

That would be the ultimate test - Id defo do that!. And while the stat is out, plonk it in a pan of water and heat it up on the hob, observing a thermometer to see at what temp it opens... if at all! if it opens way after 78deg or not at all, plus if your car's coolant temps suddenly come down without the stat fitted, then your 'new' stat is to blame.
If the stat opens okay, and if the coolant temps get to 97 odd again, then suspect the water pump knackered.
Please let me know too how you get on, so we can help each other out LOL
