If you can see lots of carbon around the joints, then you have a leak. Had a remap and was leaking from turbo to downpipe cost me almost 30bhp. Check or take to be check befor the map.

You should be able to hear it blowing with the bonnet up.

There's no easy way to know, unless its a very bad blow.
Look for soot marks(tricky) or have a sniff around the turbo area - a rich mix from a cold start is quite obvious to smell.
Mapping may show an unstable idle which can be caused by an up-pipe leak.

Bung the tail-pipe, this will put a greater pressure on the joints.... Obviously, not a perfect seal or it will "choke".

bung the tail pipe- as in put my bung in or completely block the tail pipe?
If it chokes then ok - if still running a leak?
Would it do any any harm to engine testing this method?
Cant see any soot marks lads but can smell exhaust from engine bay
Surely if there was a leak on a cold morning start if I open the bonnet ill see fumes rise from engine bay if leak?

Unless you've got a smoking engine, you won't see anything. The leaking gas flow will be very small but if it smells "rich" around the turbo area on a cold start then I'd look for a leak.

When I fitted my downpipe, it started to blow after a little while, if you look close, you can see the soot marks of the edge of the turbo/downpipe flange

Basically, your lookng for black soot around the area where they join.
