Default Timing belt change ?

My 2003 WRX is up to about 27000 miles now and still on the original timing belt. Should this be changed at the next service which is due at the start of the Summer?

If yes, should I stick to Subaru belt or I've been told that Gates make them for Subaru anyway so get one of those as it will be cheaper.

Thanks,

Andy.

On new age models, cambelt replaced at 50,000 miles and 100,000 miles etc. according to official owners handbook and confirmed by servicing interval recommendations by Subaru specialists like Subaru4You at Newbury.

It says 50000miles or 60 months on Subaru4you, my car will be 72 months old at next service.

Forget the mileage and forget about the belt!! I have never heard of a belt snapping. Being shredded by the crank pulley yes. The Subaru cambelt is very thick and strong and Gates belts and Dayco belts are both good.

DO worry about the tensioner. These have a tendancy to weep/leak and could fail. Every 5 years at least you should have the belt and tensioner replaced. Subaru4you offer a discount if you have a major service and cambelt together. Main dealers are also chopping prices in order to remain afloat.

API just did my 05 wrx (54 plate @ 45k) for £250 all in IIRC..?

I also had a modified oil pump and lightweight pulley fitted at the same time, as it made sense £wise whilst having cam belt done..
