Default misfire help please!

Just been out for a quick 10 min drive and encountered a bad misfire.
Came out of a roundabout a bit quick and got a jerk/hesitation and a loud backfire from the exhaust then it started loosing power and running on 3 cylinders.....pulled up at lights and car stalled, started it again and was chucking loads of black smoke out the exhaust and running on 3 still.

Car will not tick over at all now.....just stalls when i take my foot off throttle

Car has just had a full engine rebuild at API and just been mapped by bob rawle 300 miles ago.

Im hoping plugs have broken down!!

Any ideas lads...im pretty pissed off to say the least

Persoally i would check plugs and coil packs and see if all is ok there. If all is ok then i would contact David @API before digging too deep.
Hope its nothing to serious mate

Suggest you ring API. David will advise. Like I'm sure he said though (well he did to me when I got mine rebuilt) don't try and do anything yourself if anything untoward happens - but give him a ring straight away.

right...called RAC to get an opinion, checked a few things and they found that the coil pack had a weak spark on one output compared to the other 3.
Also he found that there was a 50% difference in resistance in two of the ignition leads.....2 on the n/s....these leads are nearly identical length so would expect that much difference.
Do you think its coilpack pack problem with what ive told you ???

Sorry not too good woth car electrics!!!

Hi mate, just seen this. I was out collecting a customer from the station from 4.15 and didn't get back and sorted 'til after closing. So I didn't know you called.

I am tied up all morning on Saturday so will not be able to spend any amount of time on the phone to you. Monday would be better if you can hang on.

It's likely a lead or coil pack problem rather than an engine problem. BUT don't worry unduly about the engine, it has a guarantee which means that we will take the pain if anything untoward has happened. We need to see the car and until something specific is identified, I think it better not to run the engine much.

Don't panic. David

This would be my guess too, considering the circumstances of the backfire. Your description is also of a classic intercooler pipe blown off syndrome.

Thanks David.....Will have a look at the boost hoses today when i get a chance, hopefully its something simple like that!!.....im positive its nothing engine related but i havent and wont drive it anywhere until its resolved.
Luckily i was only round the corner from my house so limped it home ok.

Will call you monday if i have found nothing myself.

Regards Mark
