Default expantion tank near empty? help please

I have just looked at my first impreza today 05 STI UK modle after selling my Legacy B4, everything was very clean and oil free but the exspantion tank was almost empty is this normal?, there was no mayo in the oil.............. Please can somebody let me know

which expantion tank you on about ?

the main one that sits on/near the inlet manifold or the plastic one next to the rad ?

the Plastic one next to the rad. do they tend to use a bit of water?

ah,no problems id say,its only an expanstion vessel,i bet the level was just below where you can see.

i have topped mine up twice in about 2.5 yrs with no probs and its only been a small amount.

Sorry OP. I immediately assumed you were talking about the header tank on the IM

If you go to look at it again, get the seller to mtop up the header to just below the level of the neck (if required). Also top the expansion bottle up to the max mark.

Take it out for an extensive drive using plenty of boost and watch the temp gauge. Put the heater on full with fans on - is it blasting really hot air (once upto temp obviously). Does it maiantain the heat or goes away/comes back, etc,.? Make sure the gauge does't start to rise from the normal centre postion. When you park up, check the exapnsion bottle hasn't overflowed and the battery tray isn't wet wtc. Also check that the coolant isn't bubbling away rapidly in the exapnasion bottle....
