There is nothing wrong with std Subaru item's tbh so use std rings if they are going in std pistons don't forget they will need gapping correctly, yes change the cam belt and rollers if you dont know how long they have been on there, how far are you stripping the engine down, new gaskets are going to be needed, a new thermostat won't hurt for the price either

As scoobysmiff said - it's hard to find a better ring set than the subaru original fitment when comparing cost/function/durability etc.
Prior to your final build, you should always check/gap your ring set to the individual bores to ensure you have the correct gaps to prevent "ring butting" - this would result in scuffing of the bores and damage to the coating on the rings and lead to excessive Blowby.
The rings should also be checked for the correct clearance on the ring lands on the pistons (side and back clearance) especially if re-using the original pistons as the Piston ring lands do wear on higher mileage engines.

Det damage by the look of it - possibly caused by, faulty MAF/wrong fuel for the map/fuel pump on its way out/running weak.
If the bore is scored, then you will prob need a re-bore to the first over-size (92.25mm) to remove the scoring,so you will be looking at a set of pistons and rings as the minimum to get you going.
The HB Twin Dot cast pistons for the UK'99 onwards are not too expensive from Subaru or you could upgrade to Forged Pistons if you intend running decent power.
Check the con rod on No.2, as the molten piston material normally sticks to the small end area of the rod.

Det damage !!!!!

Mick i think u just hit the nail on the head !
When we had all that snow it riped my inner arch out allowing water into my airfilter. now i no i shouldnt have run it but i had no other way to get to work, now since then the car struggled to tick over and was missing but i thought it would clear it self out, now this is the resulting damage.
the engine is now apart and cleaned ready to be rebuild, my car was running 309 with dyno sheets to prove and as im only 18 i dont really want anymore power lol. i dont no what its had done to it and im not sure if the car is a WRX STI or ETC.

Wow I have seen a few pistons like that in my time lol, like Mick says almost undoubtedly DET is the cause of that piston damage, you will need to rebore by the looks of that piston and thus, a new set of pistons and rings will also be needed.
Alternatives are:

1. Another brand new short engine from subaru already built,

2. A second hand short/long engine from a reputable dealer like API engines who will sell you something that is going to be good, or

3. Build a short block yourself, and

4. Get a professional outfit like API to build you one.

Cheers Mick,

Im not sure weather to rebuild mine or buy a second hand unit, i will be needing to rebore my block new pistons all new gaskets, rings, ETC.

I dont have much more money to spend and i really need my car back on the road so i can get a job as i live in the middle of no where lol, if anyone could help me with suggestions like a new engine or finding a short block or any other ways to fix my problem. i am not bothered about performance atm just want it running for now then later on i will look into getting uprated kit on it when im earning the money lol

Cheers Guys
