There's some debate about whether just whipping the snorkel out is a good idea, the air flow from the inner wing can be quite turbulent. One option is to take out the snorkel, saw off the square resonator box to leave just the curved upper section with a big hole in the bottom, patch the hole with some fibreglass sheet to create a single pipe (drill a small hole thru the fibreglass to allow any water to drain out), and then refit the pipe. That gives you a controlled flow from the OEM air intake but without the restriction caused by the resonator. Of course the OEM air intake passes thru the engine bay so warms up a bit, it's a trade off between cold turbulent air from the wing or slightly warmer but more controlled air through air intake. In the best case there isn't that much of a performance boost, but it's quite fun and you get a bit more noise.

I removed the oem intake route and sealed off the redundant hole in the wing

I then connected 2 pipes ducting cold air from the holes in the front bumper to the oe air box whilst still keeping the duct for the brakes in place.

Nice solution. Do you have any problems with water getting into the airflow though? Just wondered if the lower air pick up point made it more susceptible to picking up road spray, standing water etc

No issues at all. And I have been out in all kinds of weather condtions.
There are a couple of drain holes at the bottom of the ducting. It also takes a path in the shape of an S up to the air box to ensure there is no chance of any water getting up there.

I do like the look of this. However I don't think it would be an option to owners of the phase 2 cars due to the weak MAF's and the vibration it may sufffer if not clamped. I haven't read the thread all the way through but it looks like a great mod!

...But a real good set-up for those people running MAFless ECUs, such as Simtek.
