Default ENGINE WARNING LIGHT

MY ENGINE LIGHTS FLASHES ON AND OFF,ONLY FOR ABOUT TWO MINUTES AT A TIME BUT DOES THIS A VARY RANDOM BASIS,COULD GO FOR THREE MONTHS WITHOUT DOING IT THEN DO IT A COUPLE OF DAYS RUNNING AND ITS ALWAYS ON A COLD START FIRST THING IN THE MORNING,GARAGE HAVE NO IDEAS AND SAY UNLESS THE LIGHT IS ON THEY CANT DO ANYTHING,ANY IDEAS AS ITS QUIET ALARMING WHEN YOUR ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON

Please turn off the caps lock

Little more info on the car may help (what year,any mods etc?)

i assume the garage tried checking for ecu error codes? if not have you tried this yourself?

It's a uk turbo year 2000 clasic shape - mods - exhaust,air filter,dump valve engine wise but it had this problem before any of these were done,bought the car of my brother in law and was told about the light when i bought it

You can read the error codes manually (Scoobypedia | Trusted knowledge for everything Subaru | Scoobypedia / Scoobypedia under the ECU heading) but this would normally make the CEL on permanently i would guess perhaps a dodgy connection at the back of the dial cluster.
