Default chipped ecu question . sky high emmisions

Car went in for its MOT retest today and failed

emmisions are still high.

I got a cat fitted prior to the test but it still failed. The garage suspect the lambda sensor is faulty.

I presonally think the fact that the car is chipped is the issue. The chip is fitted into the bottom right hand corner of the ecu !!

what I want to know is . Can I pull the chip out without upsetting the ecu. will it go back to its standard settings ????? or will it **** the ecu

the car is a 93 WRX

please help as I have a buyer coming for the car on friday and want the car MOT'd for him coming.

What chip is it?

Most of the time the chip is in a holder so you could remove it ,reconnect the J1 resistor (if it's still there) it's pretty obvious what one it is (orangey/brown with J1 on the board)

Heres a picture of the chip in the ECU
Unsure of make etc.
Do you think its possible that this could cause emmisions issues ?

if u just replace the link J1 you will run the standard map so will prove if its the chip or if it is the 02 sensor

My MY93 WRX is also chipped, a PolarPerformance chip. It also failed the MOT on the same, got a new lambda and it passed (no cats fitted).

On the left hand side of the curcit board there is a resistor marked 'J1', if the job has been done proffesionally it should be a jumper. If you remove the chip with out re-connecting this then the car will not run at all. You do not need to remove the chip to revert to standard, just re-connect the 'J1' resistor and it will by-pass the chip.

My advice would be get a new lambda before messing with the ECU

i wouldn't use a generic map if you paid me, for exactly this reason, results are too unprecdictable

Resolder it

Not the clearest piccy

starting from the bottom left go straight across it's the first small orangey/brown thing before the 'wall' and on the board it will have J1 printed on the board

So its the red one ?????

I'm planning trying a spare lambda I got with the de-cat before buying a new one . Thats more than likely shagged too

thanks for all the help from you guys by the way. definately helping me out of a tight spot. need the car fixed to get it MOT'd so I can sell it and then pay off debts etc

the more options I have for fixing it the better. saves time and any unnecissary money outlay.

If its a pre 95 imprt you dont need a cat ??

So I take it the emmisions still have to be below an acceptable level

It doesn't specifically.

But when the MOT'er follows the on screen instructions, when he gets to the second diamond then he will select 'yes' and arrive at the limits stated.

There is prob is a more specific artical but i cant be a$$d to look any further

Still dont understand.
The second diamond were it says "First used between 1st August 1975 and 31st July 1986"
Is this what you mean? If so why would he select yes on this?

Although this is form 2003 and i think there may have been updates since then.

Although it doesn't say imports it's the wording 'exact match' that is the technicality.
