Standard position ones are available with or without external wastegates, they are "true" standard position fits :-

There are some GT3076 based hybrids available that will fit in the stock location.
The Turbo Dynamics MD555, the ATP GT3076, the AET drop in unit, and if I am not mistaken the 321V all use the 3076 wheels. TD also do one with a GT32 exhaust wheel if reqd.
The Turbo Technics S206 turbo as used on my own car has proven to produce very similar results to the Gt3076 and the above mentioned hybrids.

Martyn, you mention the S206 but as I understand it Turbo Technics do not currently have a Turbo for the Subaru other than the VF23. I know they are testing one, is this it?

You are quite correct, we have had all 3 development versions of this turbo. 2 have been fitted to 2.1 strokers and the other to a 2.5.
The release of them to the public will be very soon, they are just waiting for the foundry to produce the exhaust housings.
Feel free to pm me re info or test results.

Martyn how do you think the ATP drop in 3076 would perform up against the S206, do the ATP turbos produce the figures that they claim?
