Default uk 2000 turbo 1997 tuning?

Hiya guys

I have a uk 2000 1997 turbo, the ecu is a non mapable one, was wondering if it was possible to get an ecu off of an earlier one say 95 or post 98 and mod the ecu to fit my car so as i can get it mapped?

Thanks in advance for any imput Paul.

I am currently trying to fit a prodrive ecu from a 97 wr sport car, If it works coupled with a boost increase it should give a healthy gain, not as much as an aftermarket ecu and proper tune, but then it was 85% cheaper than a powerfc & tune but gives you about 85% of the power! Plus its mapped for uk fuel, the same turbo & injectors etc. all you have to do is modify exhaust, intake, boost pill (or fit a controller), and intercooler pipes if you want to be fussy, and you have a full prodrive performance kit.

myblackwrx, I was reading an old post about you trying to swap ecu's and having boost problems possibly relating to map sensor. You did remember that the map sensor changed from 2 bar to 3 bar at some point (I think 97 ish or possibly earlier for jdm cars), could it be that although both ecu's have the same plugs (4 is it on yours?) but one uses the later map sensor, meaning it will run on the 2 bar but will make the boost control system have a total freakout!

I should add that my97/98 cars CAN be remapped, despite what others try to tell you.

Engine and tuning Products for your Subaru Impreza, Turbo, WRX, STi or P1

For some reason those who specialise in ecutek remapping seem keen to perpetuate the myth that it cant be done? Perhaps they dont want to be bothered with adding on funky circuit boards and would rather you buy a my99 or newer car!

The ecus i was swapping about were all from the 92-96 JDM range which had the same map sensors (as far as i know and my local specialist informed me).

I'm surprised that Power Engineering aren't more proactive in advertising that product for 97-98 cars (never heard of it myself)

Thanks for replys guys thats abit pricey (£646.25 inc.VAT) for that sort of wonga i think id be better off buying a secondhand apexi and get that mapped.

Is it possible to get a 4 pin plug ecu from a 99 whack that on and get that mapped if i put a 3 bar map sensor on, what is the costs of getting a pre 97 or post 99 wrx mapped then?

99 would be a 3 plug

92-96 = 4 plug
After that they are 3 plug.

92-96 cars would cost about £500 ish (either an apexi power FC or the Live mapping board from Enduring Solutions Limited)
99 cars most people would Ecutek them ( www.ecutek.com)

i dont get why its so exspensive to map scoobie full stop im used to gtirs and the like and to get one of them mapped up was £300 and gave good results.

Im now thinking of buying a secondhand apexi and getting that mapped what sort of costs is it to map one of them, my mate said his evo cost £120 to get mapped with apexi is this about right?

Failing the above what do you guys wreckon to just whacking on a post 98 ecu and sticking a chip in that to get extra power as chips dont cost much?

Thanks again paul

92-96 can be chipped assuming they have a spare socket inside the ecu. or like myblackwrx says via esl or similar. 97-98 pretty much suck as there isn't a whole lot you can do 'properly' with regards to remapping without swapping for a different ecu like the apexi pfc. The previously mentioned power engineering option is one way, I initially read their website as they could map it using ecutec after fitting their piggyback board. Having looked again I now read it differently, and think that its not a complete remap as you might expect. I believe the map of the 97/98 jecs ecu is yet to be 'cracked' and therefore it is correct that nobody can actually rewrite it. There is a product called something like apexi SAFC I think, from memory its a versatile piggyback unit that intercepts and allows you to remap (or rescale if you will) various ecu inputs/outputs. This essentially allows a tuner to tune the car but its not a remap although has a similar effect. Its the little brother to the power fc. 99 onward cars are far easier as the ecu can be reflashed, this is similar to chipping but its a software upgrade, unlike chipping which requires an actual hardware chip. So for the record if you have a 97 car you cant fit a 94-96 ecu coz the plugs wont match and it would take forever to convert the car to 94-96 spec as there were major differences, you cant fit a 99- on ecu as, although it has 3 plugs, they are a different shape and the ecu's are totallly different inside and wont work, I think 99- are now made by denso and not jecs. Conversion to later spec is also hard and costly I believe.

SP ecu is the Prodrive ecu they will be off any car that had the PPP kit fitted iirc
A 1997 wrx would mean you would be still in the same position as you are now.

Apexi fc for 97/98 are quite rare these days, but are a good piece of kit. £200 ish is about the right price with a commander display unit aswell.
