Both turbos are reasonably quick-spooling 320-340bhp at the flywheel jobs. Possibly 350+ if lucky.

The 35 is a conventional thrust bearing; the 34 a roller bearing.

The 35 is supposed to spool a little eariler than the 34... And the 34 allegedly has a bit better top end.

As for which is newest - don't know. But I'm gonna guess it's the 34 ... But by how many weeks/months/years, haven't the foggiest.

Thanks joz for that info, defo fink the 35 might be newer lol, but basically there about the same right?? the info i got direct from subaru is that the VF35 is used in the 04 WR1 and therefore was the latest built (out of the two). Also i belive the 35 is slightly bigger??
Thanks to you two addison, good piece of info, using my car on road, maybe do the odd quarter mile but not racing. Just want to feel that pull you know!!

IHI VF35 (425cfm, 250-325whp, Bolt-On) This is the standard equipment turbocharger used on the JDM Subaru Impreza WRX. The VF35 is similar to the VF34. It utilizes the same compressor housing and the same compressor inducer size. The differences are in the divided thrust-bearing design and the P15 exhaust housing. This allows the VF35 to spool slightly quicker than the VF34 at the cost of less top-end performance. Expect to achieve full boost with the proper mods and a quality tune between 2800-3300rpms. 2002-2005 WRX owners will need fuel upgrades for this turbocharger and proper engine management is highly recommended for all vehicles.

Description:
The IHI VF-34 Turbo is found on the limited production Subaru v7 WRX STI-RA (GDB). This turbo is differentiated from the VF30 through it's more advanced bearing design. The bearing design allows for much quicker turbo spool-up (depending on tuning, 300-500+ RPMs over the VF30), while retaining the power capabilities of the VF30. The VF34 is capable of 350+ HP (~300+whp) This turbo is a direct bolt-on for all GC8, GDA, GDB EJ20 turbo engines. This is an excellent replacement turbo for those looking for substantial power gains while maintaining streetability

i have a vf35 fitted to my uk 99 wagon,it has ninja sports cat downpipe,2.5 mid section de cat and a scoobysport backbox, sti 5 top mount, walbro,it was mapped to 297bhp and 303lbft torque,1.36 bar ,im happy with the results bearing in mind that headers and injectors are standard.the car has been transformed and i love it,i havent had any experienced with the vf34 so wether u have made the right choice or not i wouldnt know,my mapper said that the 34/35 are almost identical.one thing i can tell u is u are likely to fetch 320/330 and u will enjoy.

so what my mapper says is incorrect??????????,as stated, they are like for like, almost identical.both producing roughly the same power figures! but if u think the vf34 is better then fair enough thats your opinion, the vf34 is more expensive because of the roller bearing design, and this is why alot more people opt for the 35 as its a good turbo at a good price.i personally have read up alot before i chose which one to go for.if i thought there was alot of difference between the 2 then i would have saved up more pennies for the 34.i went for the 35 with respect to what i was told by my mapper who is very experienced with mapping cars with these turbos.
