Your 95 will have a phase 1 engine, the MY99/00 cars (Version 5/6 STI engines) are phase 2 engines, problems straight away there, but you will need all the goodies, ecu, loom etc.
Why do you wish to transplant an STI engine from a later car in your car anyway? rebuild?

i have bought a 95 wrx to use mainly as a track car,i bought it as a pile of nuts and bolts, but it has ap 6pots race suspension etc,i have got the car running but im unsure of the engine, although it runs sweet, its going to be subject to some abuse so i would rather have a spare engine sitting,i figured the best replacement would be a sti 5 or 6 as the sti ones are meant to be tougher? but would rather have something to drop straight in,i could use stuff of the wrx engine if it makes life easier? would the sti engine loom plug into the car loom or would i need to replace the lot? any advice would be appreciated thanks again bryan

Your best spending your cash on just getting the engine you have up to a good standard (new uprated internals, pistons, rods etc) which will last longer than a 2nd hand engine will and then you can modify, front mounted intercooler, uprated ecu etc.

i have front mount, uprated fuel pump, udjustable regulator, full decat stainless steel exhaust etc and is rolling roaded at 311bhp so have all the basic mods to get reasnable power, uprating the current engine would be a great idea, and i can do this if/when it lets go but i would rather have an engine to drop right in as rebuilds take time and ive heard of older wrx's with the newer motors in so must be possible? thanks bryan

It is possible, you WILL need to have it mapped though, the hassle of having a newer engine and ecu will be a real pain, your best route is going for an uprated ecu (simtek for example) and mapping the car for the mods you have already as those can cause issues, but buying a second hand engine is like walking through a mine field, you dont know when it will go bang on you, your best with a 2nd engine to start a rebuild on, and it has to be similar to the one your taking out, differences (like injectors, 380's to the 440's of a v5/6 STI) can mess up fuelling and lead to engine failure.

cheers for the reply again,i think that sounds like the best advice, pick up a cheap wrx engine and rebuild/uprate,i can take my time doing this as long as the other one lasts (fingers crossed) just thought it would be worth an ask as the later sti engines seem to be pretty tough. thanks again bryan

As Tony points out there are quite a few changes between the phase 1 and phase 2 engines. If you are thinking of a comlete extra engine you also need to take into consideration that the intake manifold from a phase 1 engine does not fit a phase 2 heads because of the bolt patern.
