Default Gearboxes

Im looking at doin the quarter mile this weekend. I have a impreza 95 WRX. I have a Type RA gearbox and diff out of a 98 model. Will it give me a great deal of improvement for times or should I stick to the standard box?

The shorter ratio box will help your times over the standard gearbox but would reduce your top end. Short ratio boxes don't make for great cruising at motorway speeds but once you're on a B road or the strip they come into their own.

Don't just rely on your gearbox for quicker times as there is no substitute for a well set up car making good horsepower, and good launch technique.

yeah not just relying on it, just need a little bit of extra help as going up against a supercharged civic type r my mate has. my scooby has 296bhp. got a front mount im gonna fit first, got bigger injectors but I know i cant put them in til car is gona get mapped.

Gonna put a boost controller in and even and take the boost up to 1.1, think that is the limit til it has a newer map sensor

IMHO i'd probably save the FMIC for when you get her mapped too. It's always recommended to get a remap after fitting a FMIC

Std box will be loads quicker. One less gearchange for a start.......

RA boxes are a waste of time.

Remember they where designed to used where the engine has a restrictor fitted and thus a reduced power band.

Interesting and salient points there. ^^^

Yeah the RA box came about due to the WRC's pre-97 Gp.A homologation rules where the turbos were indeed fitted with a 34mm (or something like that) air intake restrictor.

Damn I knew it was 32mm lol... 34mm for the WRC cars from 1997 I think.

Were the WRC's 1993-96 works cars to Gp.N spec then?! Surely they were Gp.A (despite them closely being based on the production car).

Grp N production based and 32mm restrictor
Grp A more technical freedom and a 34mm restrictor (although i think it changed throughout its lifetime)

Loads of info about. lol

K, fair enough. Might save me quite a bit of time. So most opinions are that the standard box will be quickest for the quarter mile? Just my sister has a 93 RA and it has crazy acceleration lol

Aye, but it's got fuck all top end.

!/4 mile you'll HAVE to change into 5th gear, where as even on my standard WRX box, I crossed the line in 4th.
